Great to see the animation board back!
I have just gotten started on Lupin the Third Part 2. I've only seen the first two episodes. It doesn't have the same dirty look that the first had but it has better animation when it comes to mouth movements and it feels more modern than the first. They really did a number on Jigen's nose though.
I'm not huge on modern anime when it comes to the typical character look. Big eyes, snub noses and line mouths that look like lips from the side, a pointy chin, and a palm tree haircut. I don't mind having some of the characteristics on a particular character but at this point I've just gotten sick of the template designs which are often literally interchangeable with differences in eye and hair color. There are some lookalike male characters from the Studio Ghibli films but they at least move somewhat differently which isn't always possible in anime shows. Perhaps they should make fewer anime shows with higher budgets and try something a bit more artistic.
The shows I've watched most recently are Blood of Zeus Erased, Parasyte the Maxim, and kid shows like Go Dog Go which is an often overly silly show about a town of dogs based off of a picture book, or Kid Cosmic which is an action kid's cartoon from Craig McCracken who created the Powerpuff Girls. It has a good art style and an interesting plot overall but doesn't have enough time to learn a bit more about the characters.

It felt tonally mixed-- which you do get with a lot of anime-- but it also had an edgelord sheen to it. I got some Elfen Lied vibes at points, even, but that's probably just me. What were your thoughts on it?

What were your thoughts on it? I liked Shinichi and Migi. The overall plot was good but the characterization could have been better. Murano felt like more of a plot device than a character sometimes due to her sorts of generalized statements in reaction to Shinichi. They seemed to have the fight scenes down and some of the interaction logic but when it came to things like how the parasytes learn to feel it doesn't have as many answers. It's sort of like the Olaf Stapledon novel Odd John in that respect where they know that they're out of their depth in that particular area but they have to let the story carry on anyways.

I liked the dynamic between the parasite and the host the most of anything from that show. The parasite was essentially an emotionless, self-serving sociopath but also came off as incredibly naive and childlike and almost likeable even if it what it suggested was horrible. That was the draw for me. It was an interesting odd couple situation. I do agree the characterization was flat otherwise. It was very basic. Sometimes that works if you have some interesting surrounding elements but Parasyte the Maxim never truly fleshed things out in either respect. It felt rushed in execution, as well. The pacing could have been better. It has been awhile since I've watched it, however, so I can't make a fresh judgment.

Could you give me some recommendations for good animated shows with an overarching plot? I've enjoyed Macross, Eden of the East, Tiger and Bunny(though it leaves open many questions), Kaiba, Mononoke, and some Western shows like Avatar the Last Airbender and The Dragon Prince. I'm familiar with most of the obvious stuff like Cowboy Bebop and the big name anime series like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Paranoia Agent and so on.

I'm familiar with most of the obvious stuff like Cowboy Bebop and the big name anime series like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Paranoia Agent and so on. Well, Vinland Saga absolutely. I'm more in the know on the manga than the series but the series is faithful and excellent. I'm just not sure how far along it is. It's a story of revenge and political intrigue that takes place in a Nordic viking milleu with historical figures being prominent. Monster, of course, for a more serious drama and dark or ambiguous character moments. A doctor is framed for murder by a sociopathic killer and he has to find him and figure out why he was framed. It gets very dark in spots and seems to go off path at points and even gets dull but I find it compelling as a full package. Erased, which I plan to start a thread on, which I think did not end as well as it could but more than made up for it in the early moments it had. A guy time leaps back to himself as a child and has to prevent the murder of a classmate. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, as well. I'm not sure if that one needs an introduction. It's the most shounen of the series I've mentioned but it does have a lot of character development and interesting themes ranging the spectrum. Political, religious, ethical, you name it. It's a must watch even if it starts a bit slow. Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor. A guy with questionable gambling and personal habits gets roped into a contract must save himself by winning life-or-death games. It's one of those mind game animes where the focus is both on character and how he grows and about the rules of the games and the tricks to win. I do recommend that as well. Steins;Gate. A funny and suspenseful time travel story. That one is best to go into blind. Recommendations for me? I have not seen everything either.

A funny and suspenseful time travel story. That one is best to go into blind. Recommendations for me? I have not seen everything either. I'll try Vinland Saga and Kaiji which I'd tried earlier but wasn't in the mood to watch. I saw Erased and thought it was pretty good. I'd tried Steins Gate but it wasn't my cup of tea. I made it about one episode into the original Fullmetal Alchemist so I'll try the other one but can't make any promises. I'd recommend ones I mentioned already, Kaiba and Mononoke. The latter is more experimental storywise but still good. Tatami Galaxy I'd also recommend. For something out of left field, you should try The Calabash Brothers, a series of shorts from China. I might come up with something better if I have time to think, but those are the best shows with good stories. I'm much more well versed in films than I am in TV shows overall, so I could give you some better recommendations there.

Never got into Lupin. Preferred Case Closed.
Dragonball is sweet. I definitely prefer the kid Goku adventures, though we do get Vegeta in Z. Krillin was such an evil kid.
I lean more Saint Seiya. Good heavens, all the times they get those boys naked... I think you can put later shonen into DBZ influenced or Saint Seiya influenced. Naruto is definitely DBZ. One Piece as well. Bleach is more Saint Seiya.
Ryo Horikawa (vegeta/DBZ) voiced Shun Andromeda (green haired boy/pink armor).
Ranma 1/2 is fun.
Saiyuki. Love Saiyuki. Like DBZ, it's based on the Monkey King folklore. (DBZ obviously Goku is Son Goku from the legend.
Saiyuki is very good, a road story.
There's 3 or 4 anime, but they continue the story, not remake it.
The headband is a demon power limiter. Hakkai's earrings are his limited. Gojyo as a half breed doesnt have a limiter.
Another Journey to the West anime is Gokudo. The hero is a jerk, but it's fun & gives a very Japanese feel as part of the plot includes the native Japanese gods trying to usurp the "invading" gods like Buddha.
Granted, as a 60 yr old woman, my viewing choices may not be similar to yours

Yay! It finally happened! I'm so happy! As promised, I've changed my signature back to it's original form, or at least a variant of it. Now that this is back, what are the chances of getting the old archived topics back under this board? At the very least, I'd like my old decades topics fetched and brought here, would be a shame to have to start them over.

There is a definite feel to anime
When I got into it, the biggest complaint I would see was not answering all the questions. What I like about anime is it DOESN'T. It respects the audience's ability to figure stuff out. My usual viewing style is watching in English with the subtitles for the Japanese language track up. It is horrifying how terrified Funimation is of silence. Many times we'd be watching & the fighters are talking non-stop, but no subtitles so I'd pop over to the Japanese track. Nope. Not talking.
Generator Gawl is probably the worst. I think outside of Ghost Story which they deliberately changed the plot for laughs where the plot in English was different from the Japanese plot. Granted, the Japanese plot is very convoluted where some guys return to the past to prevent the creation of themselves
Cool theme

The decisive moment in the creation of this subforum was when the President of CHAD expressed his support for it. You're welcome. Thank you, your eminence.

Well that's good. In terms of how active I'll be discussing, anime is out of the question, but I can do some Disney and other major animated film studios.

I rented Mary and the Witch's Flower and liked it so much I went to two different Walmarts before I found it and bought. I watched the trailer to The Cat Returns and am goung to but the steelbook release of it. I want to buy Pom Poko too. I thought I might like Okko's Inn then I watched the trailer..NO.

It depends on what you like but Ghibli is a great start. My personal favorite of those listed is Princess Mononoke. If you're looking for series, I'd recommend Cowboy Bebop as a good entry point. It's difficult not to like something about that show and its style. I think Bebop is even up for free on Funimation with ads: www.funimation.com/shows/cowboy-bebop/asteroid-blues/?qid=None (the ads are very obnoxious by the way)
