Paul must have just lit that cigarette. Dennis Hopper was a hardcore smoker back in the day. '

I came across him at the Albuquerque airport in '73 or so. I was going up an escalator and he was coming down. He noticed I recognized him and became worried – paranoid. We passed each other without incident. He certainly shows up here and there: Giant, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, Sayonara, True Grit, Cool Hand Luke.... I liked his performance in Apocalypse Now.

Maybe I'm biased, but I feel confident you two guys might have gotten along well, even if Hopper was out of it. He was a democrat-leaning voter who turned avowed republican-leaning, and he was always up front in interviews I read.

I think of Hopper as a good guy - unpretentious, been through the ringer, good conversationalist. But that day he looked odd. Though just before he got on the escalator he was chatting amicably with someone. Hopper was clean-shaven and wearing a cowboy hat. I like this photo. Apparently, Hopper was doing a whisky ad with John Huston and Huston suggested they go visit Ford, who was rather ill at the time.

It says on wikipedia that Dennis Hopper's family moved from Kansas to Missouri before he started secondary school and that he later befriended Vincent Price who was from Missouri. Price is excellent in Hopper's crime picture 'Catchfire' (1990). That's one of my favourite movies.

As I am sure that you know, Hopper also has a small and memorable role in Clint Eastwood's first American film as a star, 1968's Hang 'Em High, emphasizing the point that there is a lot of Hollywood history—in particular Western history—in his oeuvre. Hopper is a little like Bruce Dern (who was also born in 1936 and also appeared in Hang 'Em High) in that regard, except that Dern is still around and acting.
