Remember when The Ring hit, and every horror film after that had something to do with whacked-out videos or television transmissions? Or somebody crawling, usually with a mop of stringy hair covering their face?
That was in the early part of the 21st century. Since 2013 or so, we've been experiencing the "Conjuring" type of films, with people visited by demons. Demons that, when they appear, the soundtrack goes BOOM or ZIIIING! Case in point: Insidious, Part I.
While I love ghost stories, I've found all of those films to be good for a few fake jumps, and that's about it. The Conjuring was boring and unrealistic. Insidious stole its plot from Poltergeist, basically, and Annabelle was much ado about nothing I could never figure out why ANYONE would buy such an ugly doll, even when she was new. Suspension of disbelief, I guess.
What do you guys think of the current crop of horrors?

Aimed at mainstream horror and non-horror fans who like safe, formulaic horror, not going out of the comfort zone Rehash of old success formulas, putting them together as if it would be a total new concept Basically same movies, with a few tweaks

Aesthetically they look like crap and I know I'm not going to like them, so I've never given any of them a chance.

I once read that Hollywood has been aiming horror films at 13 year old girls for quite some time. Any truth to that?

I haven't been close-minded, and I've seen them all. They're very derivative, with Poltergeist being the go-to source for most of them. If it weren't for the bombastic soundtracks that make you jump with loud noises, I doubt any of the new stuff would be very scary.

How on earth are they obscure if even non-horror fans are talking about them?

The Conjuring is the best of the current crop of horror films. I saw it at a drive-in paired with a comedy called We're The Millers.

It was awful. We're the Millers was probably scarier.

Movies like The Conjuring and Insidious are the kind of movies pretentious tr00 horror fans love to bash.
"Hey look at me, I don't like mainstream horror movies, I'm such a badass!"
Of course some people who dislike those movies don't think like that, but a lot do. It's so much cooler to only like non-mainstream horror movies, right?
The Conjuring 1-2 and Insidious might be unoriginal, but they're better made, better acted, more entertaining, scarier and have more tension than a lot of the movies they ripped off. As for Annabelle? Fuck that movie.

Interesting reading this thread in context to it approaching 2 years since the question was asked. So where are we now 20 months down the line? I literally only recently wrote in one of my reviews for a latest series entry that conduit demons have fast become jaded and therefore not scary.
Luckily some horror films in general this year have a least brought fresh ideas to the scene, yet we are still being asked to swallow more Conjuring, Annabelle, Insidious et al. Frustrating, even if I will still watch them in the hope I get a fright!

I prefer them to the endless tide of remakes/reboots.

I prefer them to the endless tide of remakes/reboots. I guess... The endless sequels and 'universe movies' are annoying to me as well though.

They’re popular because they changed the face of horror for the current decade.
Well Insidious and The Conjuring did. Annabelle was just kind of...there. It’s a prequel to The Conjuring and not its own product, so it wouldn’t be fair to put it at the same league as those other movies anyway.

The event which kick-started this new wave of Haunted House films was when Insidious beat Scream 4 in the amount of profit it made, when they faced off at the box office in April 2011:
Insidious:
Budget: $1.5 million
Box office: $97 million
Scream 4:
Budget: $40 million
Box office: $97.1 million.

I wasn't born to the 90s
but I've seen the following in theatres
Insidious Chapter II
Annabelle Creation
Insidious The Last Key
The Nun
all four dominated box office competition IMO. so i'd have to say The Conjuring Universe. and Insidious have become heir to the throne of what Halloween Franchise. NOES Franchise. and Friday The 13th Franchise were in the 70s and 80s
looking forward to these in 2019
2019 Pet Sematary Annabelle 3 Grudge It Chapter II

I think of all these new types of horror movies, Insidious is the only one I can stand to watch. The rest of them are over rated crap. I watched Annabelle and was bored out of my mind. Geez!
