Part 8 of a possibly irritating series of trifling, minutiae focused, and arguably pointless movie trivia questions.
Here is the question. Good Luck.
Using a bit of trick photography, in what movie does the star, playing a real life person, meet that star, playing themself?

Larry Parks in Jolson Sings Again? Marianne, you blow my mind! You're RIGHT! In Jolson Sings Again (1949), Larry Parks, playing Al Jolson, meets Larry Parks, preparing to star in The Jolson Story (1946). A tough question, but made short work of.

The closest I could come up with is Tom Hanks, playing Jim Lovell in Apollo 13, is welcomed aboard by Jim Lovell.

The closest I could come up with is Tom Hanks, playing Jim Lovell in Apollo 13, is welcomed aboard by Jim Lovell. A nice effort. Now if there had been scene in Apollo 13 where Tom Hanks (playing Jim Lovell) meets Tom Hanks who says, "Hi Jim, I'm gonna play you in the movie!", then there you go!

Aaawww -- I was going with Burt Lancaster meeting up with the real Wyatt Earp at the actual OK Corral
(but that turned out to be Henry Fonda who did that)

Aaawww -- I was going with Burt Lancaster meeting up with the real Wyatt Earp at the actual OK Corral (but that turned out to be Henry Fonda who did that) But Henry Fonda meeting the real Wyatt Earp would be wrong. It would have to be Henry Fonda, with mustache and six-shooter meeting up with Henry Fonda thespian, and calling him "some pissant actor". So yours is really a....................halfer!

Kevin Costner, playing Jim Garrison in JFK, might have come across Jim Garrison playing Earl Warren. The former Chief Justice wasn't offered a role, as far as I know.

'Halfer' -- I like the sound of that word It means a player can post four Come and go as they please
Some words give you a feeling 'Halfer' is one of those words That makes a player tight in the throat
The same tightness a player gets when he makes the DDC Or signs up for the Bonus Round
Some words can give you a feeling that makes your stomach turn 'Halfer' is one of those words
Say -- I think I'll borrow that word for the next Garth Game

Real life people playing bits in movies about them do occur from time to time. Lovell (pointed out by Matt) in Apollo 13. Frank Abagnale as a cop in Catch Me If You Can. Erin Brockovich played a waitress in the Julia Roberts movie. And others. But Costner coming across Garrison ain't Costner coming across Costner, like it was with Parks in a role coming across Parks the actor. That, I have to think, is a one and only occurrence.

In American Splendor (2003) dir: Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, Paul Giamatti plays comic book creator Harvey Pekar. The real-life Pekar also appears, meeting Giamatti in some scenes, as does his comic-book persona in animated form.
Watch it for free on YouTube. It is a very funny and ingenious film, but I found it strangely moving at times.
So moving that I am going to do a petrolino and add some music to my post:

Along the same lines-- This actor starred in a film bio of a real-life person whose character also turned up briefly in an earlier film. In both films, their character appears in a scene with another actor portraying another real-life person (in other words, that other actor played the same guy in both films); in the earlier film, the person portrayed in the second film was played by the real-life person's son. Who starred in the second film?
If you can unravel the convoluted clue above, this should be fairly easy, I guess.
