"If it bleeds, we can kill it!"
A highly skilled special forces unit have been sent down to the jungles of South America by the CIA, to sort out a hostage situation gone bad.
But what awaits them there, is something far more lethal than a small army of guerilla soldiers.
And what started out as just another routine, rescue mission, is about to turn into a desperate fight for survival, as the hunters, become the hunted.
What more can be said, beside that it still stands at the very top, as one of the absolute best and most badass, manly action movies ever to be made.
Explosive, thrilling, sharp, violent like few others of it's day, quotable as hell (even though it sadly seems like a lot of people only remembers the extremely overused and now tiredsome "Get to the choppa "line, which is not even among the funniest or best ones), all those things and much more is why Predator is a full blown action/adventure masterpiece.
Here we have Arnold at his absolute macho over-the-top alpha male peak, coming right off other action classics such as Commando, Conan and The Terminator, where we have grown used to seeing him as this almost super-human figure, that has little or no problem in taking out an entire army by himself, but in Predator he along with his team of high skilled badass soldiers, suddenly comes up against a creature so frightening and fierce, that we end up seeing the big guy himself, running for his life, in a desperate attempt on getting the hell away from it.
The fear we hear in Arnold's breathing as he runs for his life, was pretty damn scary back when I was younger, as I got to see my favorite hero having gone from top of the food chain, now turned prey.
I never understood and never will, why so many critics seemed to dismiss it as just another "stupid" or "braindead" Schwarzenegger action vehicle.
The action and settings/atmosphere are truly fantastic, and the whole claustrophoic feel is done to absolute perfection.
From the noises, to the many different and dangerous locations and how small the jungle really makes these larger than life action figures seem to be, the very moment they enters it.
And while we rarerly get to see the monster/bad guy, it's not what you see, that is scary, it's what we don't, and usually when the audience finally ends up seeing the monster, it is far too often, just another huge letdown.
But in this case, the Predator (Stan Winston/Kevin Peter Hall) is one of those rare occasions where you are actually rewarded with the patience, by having an instant classic monster/creature appear infront of you, and that has become over time, almost as popular as the Alien creature/monster.
Well, I guess I have already said far enough, and I could go on and on, so anway, I do hope there are other fans of this fantastic film, and even though I am not all that impressed by the rest of the series which followed, /even though the sequel was entertaining), as I felt that it completely lacked the surprising moment and the fear and unsettling tone that the original had going.
And by turning the urban city of L.A. into a battleground, I guess it was never gonna work out the same way as in the deep and hostile jungles of South America.
Still, it got an awesome cast, Danny Glover stands his ground and it comes with a couple of neat twists and turns also.
