It's Seagal so you kind of know what to expect. Being his second film and also a solid box office hit. One thing that does stand out about it is that Seagal's character Mason Storm is not in total God sue mode right away. The movie shows he and his family being slaughtered with Seagal being left in a coma for 7 years. Then he wakes up and begins to process of training so he can get his revenge. There isn't even that much action in the first half, this making it somewhat satisfying when it breaks loose at the end. Look out for William Sadler as a slimy, cowardly, politician the same year he fought and defeated John McClane in hand to hand combat in Die Hard 2. Always been one of my favorite "that guy" actors.

I love the scene at the liquor store. Mason not doing anything until *after* the clerk gets shot.

That is one of Seagal's best movies. Totally implausible how quickly he heals up but whatever. Love the part with Seagal taunting Sadler at the end ("I missed! I never miss! They must have been smaller than I thought.")

There's no such thing as a "good" Seagal movie, IMO.
One of the worst actors of all time.

His early movies up through the mid-90's are solid. Everything after that (with the exception of Exit Wounds and Machete) are terrible.

"Oh, I know what you're thinking. Mine's bigger than yours, right? It's not fair."During a investigation of a secret mob meeting, L.A. Detective Mason Storm (Steven Seagal) ends up getting more than he bargained for, when he learns that a powerful political figure is deeply involved with the criminal activity in town. But shortly after the hard evidence has been handed over to the police, Storm and his family ends up becoming the victims in a brutal shoot-out, which leaves Mason in a coma. 7 years later, he miraculously wakes up in a hospital, with only one thing on his mind, revenge! Oh, boy. Now we are talking. Hard to Kill is one of my absolute favorite Seagal/early 90s movies. This one has it all, and more. Seagal in his prime, channeling the classic bad ass revenge style of Charlie Bronson, by being a total and brutal no-nonsense ice cold bastard, where he is breaking bones and taking names like few others of that era. Also you get the stunning 80s babe Kelly Le Brock "Do you like some pussy?", as a coma nurse (now who wouldn't want to get up and ready for some action, as soon as possible, when waking up from a 7 year coma, and to be greeted by a nurse like that), and of course a whole arsenal of incredible cheesy and hilarious one-liners/quotes. For me, this one is only beaten by Out for Justice (1991), as the mans finest hour on the big screen. Sure, bigger (more and way successful) films was soon to follow, but for me, his early, gritty, over-the-top urban revenge movies of the late 80s and early 90s, was surely my favorite era of Steven Seagal. My only little "complaint" is that in this film, there is a lack of a great and menacing/memorable henchman/baddie, but on the other hand, the fight/action scenes are top notch. Fast paced, brutal and I loved seeing how Seagal seems to make the bad guys suffer as much as possible, instead of just putting a bullet into their heads and spare them for more suffering. Here are just some of many classic scenes from this hard hitting Seagal action classic: "Come get some!"When Steven Seagal enters your store, you know that you're in some deep shit. As sure as hell, there are gonna show up a bunch of assholes, looking for a fight, any second. It also comes with a great soundtrack done by David Michael Frank: The film has such a great pace and is most certainly a top 3 of the films from Seagal, along with Out for Justice (1991) and Under Siege (1992). Not far behind is Marked for Death (1990) and Above the Law (1988).

The only one of his movies that I truly enjoy is Above the Law. Under Siege is also okay, but its one in the long string of "Die Hard on something" copies.

This film inspired plenty of Indian filmmakers to rip it off fiercely in the 90s. The way to Indianize a western product is not very difficult: add a few songs at some 20-odd min. intervals, remove most sex (esp. the graphic parts) and remove the goriest bits of violence.
The plot of Hard to Kill offers plenty of space to add songs. Now most of you who are unfamiliar with Indian cinema would think this to be preposterous. But Indian filmmakers got around the problem by increasing the basic story. In all the Indian ripoffs, the hero cop's life prior to his coma is expanded upon. That section forms either the first half of the film or the long flashback after the film opens in medias res. So in all these Indian ripoffs, the hero has two heroines. That gives space for 2 songs with heroine no. 1, 2 with heroine no. 2, 1 playing during the recovery/training montage. There can be 1 or 2 more with either heroine, or else a song with some dancer in a special appearance.

Did any of them feature the Karate Kid fighting alongside Steven Seagal? No? Then leave Jackie alone a film with alpha men actual (non children) kicking ass and showing who's the boss in the kitchen is obviously giving Jackie a reaction.
