Robin Williams was a much better dramatic actor than he was comedic. And I cannot bear Adam Sandler comedies, but he has done some very good straight dramatic work. I agree about Robin Williams and he has many critically acclaimed dramas.

These dramas make these comedic actors feel more like they have to step up to the plate and prove something.

Not a movie but Sacha Baron Cohen in the limited series The Spy gave one of the greatest performances of all time, IMO. Cohen is phenomenal.
Also Cohen is great in The Trial of the Chicago 7.
Such a gifted actor.

I feel like it’s a fairly common thing nowadays.
Jim Carrey did a few. Will Farrell did stranger than fiction. Steve Carrell did that movie set near a water park.

It's a shame, that we never got to see more of John Candy, doing more dramatic or much different roles. But I guess, too often he was typecasted, as the big and charming loveable fella/sidekick, and something which is of course a big part of why so many (myself included) love John Candy. But it must have been frustrating for him, to keep on getting underwhelming scripts/parts, when he put in such fine dramatic parts as Del Griffith or his short, but memorable role in JFK (1991), one which he supposedly put a lot of effort into, but only to end up back in the cozy and safe comedy/slapstick roles.
Would have loved to see him do a few real nasty, slimy and sleazy villains, maybe some crime-thriller/action stuff, but I guess the closest one came, were this fine small part:
