Any fans of this? Gotta say I was really intrigued by the concept, but I feel like the novelty wore off pretty quickly and the movie became somewhat of a chore to get through.

"Brick" is one of my favorite movies of the decade. It riffs on American film noir, The Maltese Falcon in particular, as well as the High School drama/comedy yet is unlike any other movie. At the time, Joseph Gordon-Levitt was known mainly from a silly TV sit-com but he really breaks out here as a serious actor.
I also love it that the characters frequently speak in a kind of hipster slang that has been made-up for the movie ("Who does he eat lunch with?"). This is a quite wonderful touch that gives the film a sort of fantasy/sci-fi touch, like an alternate universe.

It has an interesting premise, but I felt the vernacular was off-putting and hard to understand. Overall, I still liked the film.

I liked it myself. I’m partial to film noirs/neo noirs anyway. Putting it in a high school setting was a cool twist.

I didn’t quite love it, and the plot lost me quickly, but I found it good-bizarre enough to appeal to me. Mike’s comment about feeling like it’s taking place in an alternate world is spot on.

I feel similar. It's kinda cool and fun at first, then it becomes forced noir cliche after cliche.
