Who did you like better? Kind of interesting how Ian was in JP2 but Grant wasn't, and then in JP3 Grant came back but didn't bring back Ian.

I liked Dr. Grant as a kid better.
As an adult, I think Ian is more interesting.
That being said, Dr. Grant is easily the better lead actor. As Ian is only good as a supporting character. That’s what makes him great.
When he became the lead in The Lost World, they changed him a lot. He wasn’t as quirky.

In the first movie Ian Malcolm was the best of the major characters but they sidelined him halfway through. They used Goldblum better in the sequel but Neill was used effectively in the third. I don't have a preference though I think Goldblum is more likeable as a screen personality.
They both played the Devil ironically enough.

Dr. Ian Malcolm was the more interesting character, but I always liked Dr. Alan Grant more.

Not sure. Dr. Grant is cooler, but Dr. Malcolm is more fun.

Ian of course.
The sexy nerd scientist with a sense of humor who knows how to talk to women? Hell yeah. He's multifaceted which is what humans are, he cared about children, evident even in part one, and he makes the whole best argument in the entire franchise: "What you call discovery I call the rape of the natural world." Oh, and the fashion sense!
Plus, Jeff Goldblum in his prime.
There's no way Grant tops any of that. That's why the chick left him as seen in part 3. Mr. Boring.

They were each better suited for the sequel they starred in. I do prefer JP3, yet that's as much about JP2's Michael Bay Transformers style final act, Goldblum was great.
The first one I think I preferred Ian until he got taken out of the game. Grant was pretty good from the T-Rex onward.

Dr. Grant is the more interesting and likeable character to me, despite the fact that we're obviously supposed to think Malcolm is more interesting.

Malcom is more interesting hence why he was cast as the lead in the sequel. Grant was boring.

No preference. Grant was the perfect lead for the original film. His look and behaviour suited the role. Ian was just the comic relief, but did an excellent job of coming into his own as the lead in the sequel.

He was cast as the lead in the sequel because Michael Crichton wrote Dr. Malcolm as the lead character in his novel The Lost World. It had nothing to do with anyone being unsatisfied with Sam Neill or Dr. Grant.
