I watched it earlier this week. The movie, not the trailer. Great production values, but a bit confusing with the double-crosses and the triple-crosses and the quadruple-crosses, and with a mission that is not very well developed. Also, the heroes are communist agents, but who are the villains? They seem to be agents of the Nationalist government, but isn’t it supposed to be Japanese-occupied Manchuria? The Japanese are only mentioned, never shown. Are the government agents who are pursuing the communist heroes collaborating with the Japanese? That is just my ignorance of the period I guess, and it is possible that it would be perfectly clear to a Chinese audience.
Anyway, I didn’t like it very much. On top of all that, it carries some not-too-subtle propaganda for the Chinese Communist Party. Before the end credits roll, there is a dedication to the “heroes of the Revolution”. I felt like shouting at the screen “what about the VICTIMS of the Revolution “?
