After about 25 years, it's time to replace the 'fridge.
My "old friend" is 18.2 CU Ft, with a top freezer, and lower crisper drawers. As I live alone, I really don't need anything gigantic. However, I do want to expand my general SHELF space, somewhat ... and I definitely want more FREEZER capacity.
The original 'fridge that was here when I moved in had a bottom freezer, that was deep, and had no light. (I suspect that it came over on The Mayflower.) I got tired of crawling around on the floor, with freezing fingers, to find what I wanted. It was a nightmare. Some lower freezers that I've seen, more recently, are lighted and spacious. I like that.
Most friends who have side-by-side 'fridge/freezers, aren't crazy about them. I have no experience with having had one, but they're not particularly appealing to me. And, if I don't care, either way, about an ice dispenser.
Space is not a problem. This is an old apartment, and my "pantry" area has a high ceiling, and plenty of width.
What have been you best/worst experiences?

divtal: most of the ones I've had have been the side-by-side type of fridge/freezer. I actually don't have a problem with them. You probably won't be able to fit a frozen pizza in it very easily unless you stand it vertically, but other than that minor inconvenience, I'm okay with them. In my very first apartment I recall having one with a freezer compartment on top, and refrigerator space below. That configuration was okay, too. The only kind I wouldn't like would be the ones with the pull-out freezer drawer on the bottom, at floor level.

Freezer on the bottom, no ice maker and no water dispenser (have you ever seen how dirty that pipe in the wall gets?)

The only bottom freezer that I've ever seen, and liked, is my brother's. It is a drawer format, but it has a light. I still think I want a top freezer.
WKM, I've never had an ice maker, or water dispenser, just because I don't think I need them. You make a good point about cleanliness. That would never have occurred to me. Now, I know I'll never get them.

Devils advocate here, divtal
Lol
My freezer is on the bottom and I hate it
You have to lean over and reach WAY down. Sometimes with something heavy I have a hard time.
The ice maker is difficult to turn on and off. I have to kneel and reach way back over the compartment.
I think it would be fine for someone with great balance and youth. Lol
There is a side by side that my daughter has. It has a drawer the width of the unit. (Pizza? Flat things)
I would not get the freezer on bottom unless I was young.

Also divtal the freezer on bottom? If something drips it is near impossible to reach under the drawers to clean. Mine has drips I cannot reach

My current fridge has the vegetable crispers on the bottom. It's easy to take out those drawers for cleaning. Yep ... I'm going top freezer.

What have been you best/worst experiences? I've always preferred a bottom freezer. Nothing worse than hard frozen foods falling out of a top freezer. Finally replaced mine with a GE side by side. I do like it. Keeps good temperatures, though both refrigerators have a spot where things will freeze. Ice and filtered water outside. I also got lucky with the Lowes installers, who were very good and leveled it and saved me money and more waiting time re the water connection that they weren't supposed to connect to without a new fitting. And they wouldn't take a tip.

We had ours for many many many years and finally had to get a new one, which is as much like our old one as possible, little freezer on top, icemaker, etc. The absence of an actual meat drawer though is a slight disadvantage though.

I wish I had a refrigerator with the French doors on top and the freezer on the bottom but they are expensive and at our age we have to watch our pennies.
