Rewatched Screams 2 and 3 over the weekend. Its been a while and felt like revisiting.
Scream 2 works for the most part. The characters positions and interactions all make enough sense...Scream 3 on the other hand...i feel like they leaned way too heavily on the obvious red herrings to the point that it doesn't really jive with the eventual reveal. Like...theres just no way Kincaid wasn't a killer. Or that at the very least there wasn't a second killer in play. One of the bigger hiccups for me is why Roman would frame himself for the murder of Sarah by using his own voice. It does nothing but make him look like a suspect early in the film and removes him from being able to continue stalking, setting up and killing the rest of the characters. Granted he's only arrested for a few hours or whatever but still...the time he's arrested is the same time Sid gets a phone call from the killer...now maybe just because those two scenes are back to back doesn't mean they happen all that close together but it still feels like an unnecessary risk on Romans part to frame himself in any way. Especially since he doesn't plan on revealing the voice mimicker as part of his framing of Sidney at the end of the film. On top of that is all the allusions to Kincaid being shady...mostly by his actions but also Sid finds her police folder on his desk right before the big finale...meaning Kincaid had it. I feel like the movie would work fine if they just had Kincaid and Roman teaming up...but have Kincaid be the long lost son of Maureen and have Roman in it for the fame and attention.
I don't know. The third film has always been my least favorite and i don't rewatch it as often but i can't help but see a million missed opportunities. Then again Scream 4 had missed opportunities too imo so...nothing new.

Scream 3 is a mixed bad. I like it but its my least favorite of the 4. It seemed like Sydney, Dewey and Gale were the only characters we were supposed to care about.
Great soundtrack though.

I still think this movie is okay, but easily the weakest of the bunch. Roman's motives were really confusing but I give him some credit for doing all the work by himself. Every other movie it was 2 killers.

I almost fell asleep on my last rewatch of Scream 3. It's such a lacklustre effort, I mean, I had completely forgotten who the killer was. The new characers were all dull. Lance Henriksen is always fun to watch and the movie-within-a-movie concept was interesting, but the death scenes were lame (the official explanation was, that they chose to tone down the violence because of Columbine). It has very little genuine terror or even tension.

The coolest line tho…
*Sidney pops up with the killers knife.* “Lost something?” Killer looks at her and says “Found something.” Then shoots her with Kincaids gun.
That part is still fun.

Haven't seen it in a while. My memory is mostly that the reveal and the motives of the killer were pretty weak, the comedy was ramped up past the point of satire into near slapstick, but that it had its moments, the set pieces with Sydney on the soundstage replica of her home was pretty inspired, the Randy video tape discussing trilogies was pretty clever but kind of a cheat, and that the movie at least did justice to Sydney as a character.

The comedy definitely went to eye rolling levels. Even during kills where we’re supposed to be at least concerned for characters if not biting our nails in suspense. The dead mom stuff was creepy but felt like it came in out of nowhere.

It originally did have a second killer: Angelina, the shreaky actress. But that doesn't really clear up any of your plotholes. Roman framing himself is purely to trick the audience/a reference to Billy. I suppose maybe he was trying to get Sid's info, and lucked out because Dewey happened to loan Kincaid his phone at the same time? And Ronan somehow got ahold of it while in custody? I don't know, it's nonsensical.
Kincaid would make more sense as a killer, plus he's an actual character so the audience would remember him come reveal. The first time I saw Scream 3, I didn't even recognize Roman.

The reveal feels less like a ‘Whaaaat!’ Moment and more like a ‘Who?’ Moment.

I didn't really feel that way with Scream 2, it made sense and came together for me, but I did have that feeling with Scream 3. He was a completely ancillary character and the relationship to the main story felt like kind of an afterthought. On a side note, that's how I felt when I saw The Prowler. I remember watching that movie with people and when the killer is unmasked we all kinda said, 'huh? Who's that guy?'
