Both based on the same novel - The Hunter, by Donald E. Westlake.

Have you seen the director's cut? Not yet, but I know a lot of people prefer it to the theatrical cut.

Both based on the same novel - The Hunter, by Donald E. Westlake. That poster for Point Blank is seriously badass.
I've only seen the theatrical version of Payback which enjoyed.
I've been meaning to watch Point Blank but from what I've heard it starts out great, but soon loses its way in the second act. I always assumed that it was a gritty, straight-forward revenge thriller, but it seems to be more drawn-out and experimental like the Soderbergh movie The Limey which I didn't like much.

I've only seen the theatrical cut of Payback, i've never watched Point Blank. I recently watched Hell in the Pacific, another Boorman/Marvin film, and the bluray commentary references that film a few times. I need to check it out.

I don't like The Limey much either, but Point Blank a good movie imo.

Payback.
Gibson gives such a slick, badass performance. I also like that the movie has some dark humor.
The tagline is awesome: " Get Ready To Root For The Bad Guy"

Point Blank is a good enough film on its own but I thought that the experimental, "metaphysical" stuff was unnecessary. It doesn't compare favourably to the novel. In the novel, Parker does everything on his own, doesn't need any shady vigilante cop or any love interest to help him.
Payback is an extremely stupid, tonally inconsistent travesty. That goes for both theatrical and DC. Parker is an all-powerful badass killer at one moment, the next moment he is being hit by cars or knocked out by people, both cases which a blind man could have avoided. DC has a different, more bummer ending and less wisecracking but that alone doesn't make it better since 90% of dogfuckery that is present in theatrical is also present here.

This is just my opinion, but I am genuinely surprised by how close the results are. Admittedly I have not read the novel. Payback is perfectly good and enjoyable entertainment. Point Blank is something else. Comparing the two films, Point Blank is iconic and just on another plane - one of the best tough guy movies from that or any era. Never saw the director's cut of Payback, and would be interested in checking it out, but I don't see it making much difference in this comparison. Again, just my opinion.
