From the Albuquerque Sunday Journal August 15, 2021. On July 14, 1881, Lincoln County [New Mexico] Sheriff Pat Garrett shot Billy the Kid in the chest at Pete Maxwell’s ranch. Garrett’s Colt Single Action, which he used to kill Billy is an artifact of one of the most important and well-known stories of the Wild West. On August 27, more than 140 years after Billy’s death, a piece of New Mexico history will be sold at auction as Garrett’s pistol will go under the hammer at the Los Angeles based auction hours, Bonhams. It is one of the most important and well-documented historical firearms. It expected to fetch between $2 million and $3 million. Some other important Wild West items are in the lot to be auctioned. Wild Bill Hickok’s Springfield Trapdoor Rifle buried by his side at Deadwood, South Dakota on August 3, estimated between $150,000 and $200,000. [The article doesn’t explain how the rifle got from the coffin to the auction house but Hickok’s burial site was moved at one point. The most famous of Bat Masterson’s Colt Single Actions, ordered July 24, 1885 from the Opera House Saloon, Dodge City, Kansas. Est. $200,000 to $300,000. A rare Virgil Earp Tintype, full length standing portrait after 1882 and the only known image of him with his injured arm [he had his elbow shattered by a bullet, reputedly fired by Johnny Ringo]. Est. $200,000 to $300,000. John Wesley Hardin’s final signature, a bar tab to the Wigwam Saloon in El Paso, Texas. Hardin then went to the Acme Saloon to play dice. There, he was shot from behind and killed on August 19, 1895. Est. $10,000 to $15,000. Pat Garrett’s contract for the publication of his 1881 book “Authentic Life of Billy the Kid.” Garrett had not been treated well by the press after his famous gun fight so penned this book (with a co-writer) to tell his side of the story. Est. $8,000 to $12,000. Garrett’s pistol from the Bonham’s website.
