PRESENCE .It's quite an unquantifiable but distinct Thingy. Jolly Hard to ascertain a Greatest.....but I am gonna throw in my personal ten penn'orth. There's some great actors who have wide ranges of skills that can (for want of a better word) almost transcend a role, ala, De Niro, Daniel Day Lewis, Peter Sellers, Gary Oldman Meryl Streep, and the suchlike , but not necessarily with a 'Presence' driven element, moreso because of their admirable craft and skill. Folk , for me, who seem to have that unexplainable 'presence',, whether it be size, looks, eyes, chutzpah, bollocks, accent, delivery, voice, smile, a mixture of those....or whatever.... are: James Cagney John Goodman Kenneth Williams John Wayne Anna Faris, Fred Astaire Bill Murray Michael Caine Robert Downey Jr Bill Murray Gene Hackman AL Pacino Anthony Hopkins Brian Dennehy (not Always but often) George Formby Nicholas Cage. I have just finished a fierce shift and had a few glasses of Merlot, but these are the bods that have first come to mind.....all In my humble opinion, of course. Intriguing thread. I like your description, Doc. Hard to define, but they have that certain something; and I like your list too. Thanks for reading my thread while enjoying your Merlot.

I'm going to bypass everyone in silent films because that was the era of pure physical presence.
For me it has to be an actor who walks into the frame and you simply cannot take your eyes off him or her (even during long stretches when they say nothing).
Walter Huston Boris Karloff Bela Lugosi Charles Laughton James Cagney Humphrey Bogart Laurel and Hardy Chico Marx, singled out because I always follow him even when the other brothers are on screen Barbara Stanwyck Kate Hepburn Edward G. Robinson Gary Cooper John Wayne Shirley Temple Walter Brennan Marlon Brando James Dean Steve McQueen Torin Thatcher Takashi Shimura Giulietta Masina Russell Crowe Billy Bob Thornton Billy Drago Laurence Olivier Sean Connery Gene Hackman Lee Marvin R. Lee Ermey Lee Van Cleef Robert Duvall Gene Wilder
and that is enough for one sitting.

Burt Lancaster has a sizable presence.
Jessie Plemons has an unconventionally large presence, like his doppleganger dad Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Setsuko Hara Monica Vitti Anna Karina Tatsuya Nakadai Alain Delon Tony Leung Chiu-wai Thanks Fox in the Snow, I don't know anyone on your list, but you can tell even from a still photo that they would have great scene presence.

Whenever James Cagney is on the screen, it's hard for me to look elsewhere, as he has such a compelling presence. (Tomorrow is Cagney's day on TCM, by the way).

I was probably looking at Harpo if not Groucho, but I'll pay attention to Chico next time. Funny I didn't think of Crowe, I use to really like him. And yes, child star Shirley Temple, of course, another great pick.

Yes, I love James Cagney, thanks I'll check out TCM. I've watched a few docs on him. He seemed to be a great person that loved nature and never remarried, I mean what's not to love?

I've always liked Chico. Groucho was the one who came up with the schemes and Harpo came near to wrecking them, but it was Chico who made them work. I also love his eccentric piano playing. He makes it look so effortless. It is certainly more fun than Harpo's strumming, and he always seems to be enjoying himself, as if he's happy to drop the schtick for a few minutes and just have a great time.

Whoever put Keanu Reeves as having screen presence should be shot. He has the presence of a goldfish.
