Movies that seemingly began with the idea, "What if...". I suppose every movie could be one technically, but what are some good examples? I'll start.
Vivarium (2019) starring Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg - What if you went to look at a house and you got trapped in a never ending suburban housing development?

Bump. Speed - What if there was a bomb on a bus and it couldn't slow down to under 50mph or it would explode? Jurassic Park - What if we cloned dinosaurs and put them in a dinosaur zoo?

Batman (1989) - What if a boy's parents were killed and he started dressing up as a bat and fighting crime?
Big - What if a boy wished he were a grown man, and his wish actually came true?

I thought Joker kind of fits the scenario.
What if average appearing social-worker over-medicated nutcase who looks like he smells like pee on a good day turns into one of the most upsetting villains of all time.
West Side Story. What if Romeo and Juliet, but as a musical in New York?
Inception, perhaps?
What if inception was a real idea.
District 9 -
What if aliens arrived... and they were easily subjugated, made indifferent to and mistreated by people who've gotten over the shock factor of their arrival and now treat them like a burden.

The Man in the High Castle - a miniseries based on the idea that Germany and Japan won WW2 and occupied the US.

Those are good ones! The Hunger Games - What if a country was such a shit hole that the only thing that could make people feel better is an annual children's battle to the death?

Yesterday - based on the idea that only one person knows the Beatles music.
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood - alters the history of Hollywood celebrities and the Manson Family, at least at the end.

Upside Down. A world where two flat planes are juxtaposed so that each finds those on the other to be upside down.
Corpse Bride. What if a groom to be accidentally married a living corpse woman while practicing his wedding vows?

Pixar's films fall into this category: - Toy Story: "What if toys came to life?"
- Ratatouille: "What if a rat could cook?"
- WALL-E was marketed as "What if mankind left the Earth and forgot to shut off the last robot?"
- The Good Dinosaur: "What if the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs missed the Earth?"
- Inside Out: "What if your emotions had feelings?"
Bruce Almighty: "What if you could be God?" The Truman Show: "What if your life was a television show?" Being John Malkovich: "What if you could enter the mind of John Malkovich?" Groundhog Day: "What if you live the same day over and over again?" Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: "What if you could selectively erase your own memories?"
