What are some films that revolve around an item that moves from person to person over time- with different lives?
I can only think of three:
Winchester '73 (50) The Yellow Rolls Royce (64) The Violin (2005)
I'm guessing that the horror genre has something along these lines as items are often cursed- but I can't think of any titles

TALES OF MANHATTAN (1942) follows the travels of a tailcoat from owner to owner.
The emotional highlight is the segment featuring fledging composer Charles Laughton conducting his orchestral piece while wearing the tattered tailcoat -- which rips up the back in the midst of the crescendo.
First the orchestra, and then the audience, respond to his embarrassment by removing their own suit jackets.

Tales of Manhattan is the first movie that came to my mind, too. The Edward G. Robinson segment (my favorite) is right up there with Laughton. The WC Fields episode is the one that did not work for me (amazingly!). You would expect it to be a laugh riot, but it simply was not funny. Supposedly, it was excised because the movie was running long, but it is possible someone took a look at it and said: "This ain't working the way we planned." It was best left on the cutting room floor.

If there's room for something living and breathing, A Dog's Purpose (2017) follows the same dog, reincarnated as different breeds, through many different owners.

The almost forgotten Canadian horror movie, The Mask (1961) in which the title object brings madness and death to whomever wears it. Not multi-storied (we only get two victims and a hint of a third at the end). Several hallucinatory sequences in 3D don't make up for the one-trick story and bargain basement budget. Still, it's worth at least one go-around.

Mention of The Violin made me think of The Red Violin which involves the many owner of the eponymous object over the centuries.
A red balalaika pops up throughout Dr Zhivago.
The Maltese Falcon hints at this.

Trying to figure out what qualifies as a "classic" film, these days can be difficult... but since you note a film from 2005... Then this one should qualify...

The Violin (2005) in no way meets his criteria, but the Red Violin (1998), dir: François Girard. most certainly does. It is very good, possibly the best Canadian big-budget movie ever (?). I am ashamed to say that I did not get the whole point of the film until a second viewing.

In planetx's Counterfeit Classics... thread are mentioned:
The Counterfeit Coin (1955) written and directed by Giorgos Tzavellas
L'Argent (1983) dir: Robert Bresson
Both are about forged money passing through various hands, generating brief stories in each case.

Horses passing through various ownerships ( War Horse 2011 dir: Steven Spielberg is another) all derive from Anna Sewell's classic novel Black Beauty, itself filmed a few times.

The only one I can think of offhand is Cronos (1993) dir: Guillermo del Toro, where a blood-sucking chronometer has wreaked havoc among its owners for 400 years, but only the last two owners' fates are depicted on screen.

Two movies about a parrot that goes through several owners-the family film Paulie, one of the few talking animal movies that's actually pretty good, and the indie film A Bird of the Air, a decent adaptation of one of my favorite novels, The Loop by Joe Coomer.

I just looked up Violin online when I was typing (to get the date) and got the wrong one- I didn't even watch the 2005 version. My bad. Thanks for all the suggestions from everyone- I'll check them out. I really thought there would be more in the horror genre- oh well.
