Cool. I look forward to the deluge of clowns complaining that their queer bondage horror movie is being ruined by SJWs, or something.

I've literally never seen you on this board, or so much as reference a horror movie, until now. You really can't live without that daily dose of hatred and fear, even if it involves something you don't even care about.

Cool. Thatโs fine with me.
But I know why you posted this. You only ever post subjects that might stir shit up. Youโre scum.

This actually makes sense if youโve read The Hellbound Heart, the novella that Hellraiser was based on.

There is an element of annoying tokenism sometimes when they do this kind of thing, but if it would work for any material this story would make sense. I think just the idea of not having our traditional Pinhead is kind of a disappointment though. I liked the idea of a Pinhead couple in some fanmade images where there was a Doug Bradley looking guy and a topless Pinhead lady. It made sense to me.
I wonder if that HBO series is still movie forward. It would be strange but maybe interesting to have two different versions of the story being done simultaneously.

Is it really tokenism or is the OP just hyper-focused on his prejudices? If they cast a transgender person but don't call attention to it, is it really any different than, say, Romero casting a black man in Night of the Living Dead?

It seems like it all makes sense, but I don't think there's any denying that sometimes these things are badly handled and done for publicity above anything else. I can't say what this fella who started the thread is motivated by, but it seems like he just might not have the purest of intentions either. I'm just getting that feeling, don't ask me how.

There's nothing wrong with that. Some things need publicity so people can see it's ok if a straight, white male isn't cast as the lead in everything.

There's nothing wrong with that. Some things need publicity so people can see it's ok if a straight, white male isn't cast as the lead in everything. There can be something wrong with anything that's just cynical conformity for an attempt at making waves or jumping on whatever the trend is. Whatever the context or whoever is involved, when you can see through that it can just be kinda lame. Frankly, that's inherent in any remake or sequel anyway, so it's just another layer of the same thing. My immediate reaction is a lot less eye-rolly when they give new parts to different kinds of people rather than just remake something and turn a white male character into a black female character or something like that. It's a cliche and it's no longer any sort of interesting or creative choice to me.

That's subjective. But sure, there can be something wrong with anything. But that doesn't mean something is automatically wrong.
And yet, there've been some phenomenal remakes and sequels.

I think you'll find that I didn't say that anything is automatically wrong. Of course there have been great remakes and sequels. That changes nothing about what I said. I just find that this argument, and most that take place online and probably most that take place anywhere, tends to forego nuance and thought in place of taking sides and labeling everyone. Someone can point out that there are trends taking place that are not made for creatively interesting reasons without being a hateful bigot. Likewise, there can be someone cast in a role thats different than you'd like without it being 'wokeness' or 'radical man-hating feminism' or whatever else people say. Both things can be true.

Well the Lead Cenobite (better known as Pinhead) was a female in the novella from what I heard, so I am not bothered by this.
