Anybody watching this? I've asked a few times about series on here and I guess nobody else is watching them, but this one has become a bit of a sensation. We just started it last night and so far it seems like it's got some shared DNA with Battle Royale, as I had heard.

It's fantastic, I binged it last weekend. The ending felt wrong at first, but I realized it's character driven, not story or audience driven, and makes sense.

I've got 3 left now. It's certainly more character driven as it goes on. The lead character started as about as unlikeable and dickish as you could get, and the pride of the town guy seemed like a nice dude in a bad spot, but now they've sort of flipped. The lead guy has become actually pretty caring and actually kind of selfless, or as much as he could be, while the other guy feels conflicted about what he's doing but is really just now looking out for himself, and doing so at the expense of others. The scenario is still there in the story, but now that the relationships have developed the marble game was a pretty upsetting one. Whereas the first game was disturbing and intense this one was emotionally difficult. A lot of series seem to over stay their welcome these days. A lot of times I'll see one of these shows everyone seems to be talking about and I wish they would have cut it down to a feature length film and don't appreciate stretching otherwise thin material to an episode mandate, but the two recent Netflix shows I've seen really do justify the time commitment without feeling overstuffed. This one and Midnight Mass both take advantage of the structure of episodic storytelling and flow naturally from chapter to chapter.

I binged it first weekend and loved it. Battle Royale meets Takeshi's Castle with a dash of Parasite I was gonna say that I've never heard of Takeshi's Castle, but then I looked it up and saw that MXC in the US was literally the same show just with dubbed voices.

It's a very strange show moreso for it's background than content - Japan's greatest director/actor (IMO) hosting a cheap childish gameshow. You's never would have seen Orson Welles doing something so odd & diverse

It's fantastic, I binged it last weekend. The ending felt wrong at first, but I realized it's character driven, not story or audience driven, and makes sense. What bothered you about the ending? The ending of the games or the sorta epilogue that took place a year later? There are certainly a lot of questions left over, and even though it's a complete work and totally could be a self contained one and done kinda thing, it's such a big success that I imagine Netflix is gonna ask for more, and the very ending sets up a potential sequel season that would see the protagonist go back and try to destroy the whole thing. We also don't know what happened to the cop and if any of his files sent. I don't think it needs more time, but there are still more things to explore I the story. I felt the ending was mostly satisfying without giving everything an easy and tidy conclusion.

I felt the ending was mostly satisfying without giving everything an easy and tidy conclusion. The ending of the game. I expected Seong to die and his brother-in-law to win, but that was me forgetting the title was Squid Game, which was the game they showed Seong playing in the beginning. Once I saw the final game, I knew Seong would likely win and was a little disappointed because it would have been a bigger emotional punch for him to lose. Before the game he was a parasite, a loser, and even in the game was largely an unsympathetic character. It just felt a little like a cop out Hollywood ending. But after thinking about it and realizing the story was his transformation it made more sense. Even the epilogue makes sense in that context because the stakes mattered and he went from being emotionally dead to feeling alive.

Don't have Netflix at the moment. But I do like "Battle Royale" and similar movies. (The sequel to "Battle Royale" I did not care for.)

I thought it was good for the most part. Perhaps a bit too much downtime between games, and the guards looked badass but proved to be about as competent as stormtroopers.
Wasn't big on the stock "Asian lady that makes goofy faces" character, or the ice squeen with one facial expression until the last two episodes. But the main guy was good and I liked the actor. Not so good of actors were the "Americans".
Then the final twist was a little lame. Mildly surprising, but hurt one of the more interesting characters and didn't really add much.
Ended on a cliffhanger. Might watch season 2, but again, gimme more games.

Started watching the reality show version. Pretty much what you'd expect. Really feels like they missed the whole point of everything by making it at all, but it's entertaining and interesting that all of the contestants have seen the show so they have an idea of what games they'll be playing.
