The drive ins went into decline long ago. Why?
Well, 40 years ago, 1981, people began seeking comfort much more. In 1971, most people were used to hot weather, cold weather, and the elements. Only the filthy rich had air conditioning in homes, and only the filthiest of the rich had AC in cars. Drive ins were not comfortable, but it wasn't any different than being at home.
The drive in offered "atmosphere" and "fun" that you couldn't get in theaters, no matter how much theaters tried. Sure, there was climate control, and theaters began putting in arcade machines in the 1980s, but there was no "fun", no "atmosphere".
Drive ins suffered from lack of the audible, too. And, of course, the drive in close from about mid October till the beginning of April. That's half the year of no business,. Most would sell Christmas trees and other seasonal items, but we know how the Christmas tree became a thing of the past by 1985.
So, what changes?
Not the pandemic. That only highlighted the change. No one cared. Okay, so a few geeks on IMDB, a site devoted to movie geeks, they cared, but no one else. "Theater closed? Okay, we'll do something else. That wasn't high on our list any way. We have a 45 inch screen at home."
Meanwhile, all drive ins really needed to survive were climate control options like domes. Domes are expensive to build, but they'll be excellent investments. And you only need a "carport" style dome. You don't have to build a dome that is extreme. You don't have to cover everything.
The more a dome covers, the easier the climate control will be, however. Still, you need the atmosphere of the outdoors.
The sound system will be the new bit of technological advancement. And you have to include the old fashioned concession stand. What about restrooms? Do you go with the atmosphereic primitive or the modern sanitary? Well, do both of course. One nice one for those who need it, and one primitive one for the old day nostalgia.
So why not theaters? Get real. There's no "atmosphere" in movie theaters. They're sterile and lifeless. Even the concession stands are sterile and lifeless. So there's a huge screen. People are getting gigantic screens at home, and they aren't costing very much either. They can adjust their lighting and sound at home, and stop and start and do anything. Why would anyone want to go to a theater? I mean, besides anyone who wasn't a total geek?
You can improve a theater all you want, but the advancements of drive ins are going to give them such an edge, it will be like Tommy Aaron (movie theater) trying to compete with Hank Aaron (drive in). No offense, Tommy.
By 2040, the new improved drive in will be built in almost every county in the U.S., with drive ins outnumbering theaters at least 5-1.
This will happen, no matter how much some of the geeks here whine about it.

Yeah I still think theaters will be around. Theaters and drive in to watch a movie virgins will always be around. You go to a cinema to relax and watch a movie not be sat in the driving seat so your friends or whoever goes with you will have to themselves be forced to watch a movie behind the driver's fat head. And the rain too.

You have no vision. It's easy to predict. I went to a movie theater once this year. Last week, to see the new 007 film. I was the ONLY person in the entire theater. I had it all to myself. Saw zero movies in theaters during pandemic 2020 I went with my brother to see one movie two years ago. This time there was a group of three people sitting in the theater. That's all. Just five of us altogether. The year before that, went to the movie theater twice. One time, I counted four people in the entire theater. The other time, seven of us. It was quite easy to count. Quite easy to see. These were all new releases. Maybe not the first week, but certainly within the first three weeks. Went to the drive in one time in the past five years. It must have been two years ago, because there was no social distance. It was packed. Concession stand was packed. The Georgetown Drive In doesn't have new age technology. Pretty soon, the new age technology will introduce high domed coverings, or maybe tarp, to cut down on poor weather and snow and rain, along with improved audibles. When the new age drive in arrives, it will be careful to keep the "atmosphere" of the outdoors, and bring along the comfort and quality of the future. Who in the world would rather sit in a sterile, boring movie theater instead of an exciting, outdoor, fascinating, spectacle filled drive in? Who? A few people wanting to be Siskel and Ebert?

I’ll be one to tell you to FUCK OFF!!!

You have to admit that only the most relentless dork has to see a movie the first week that it comes out. Most people wait a few weeks any way, just to be away from the whiny dorks who have to see a movie the first week. You're totally out of touch with reality. Surely, you know that much. No offense. You're in your own little world.

We used to have a bunch of Drive-Ins around here. In the 80's, most went to Porn. John Holmes on a Drive in screen must have been a sight to see

Considering the changes in technology happening today and the push toward a total Green Energy economy, what makes you believe people will still be driving cars in 2040?
It is going to be somewhat difficult attending a drive-in theatre in a five-car public transportation train.
I miss those drive-in nights when I was a teenager, but they have gone the way of the dinosaur and I very much doubt a Richard Attenborough clone is going to be around to create the perfect Jurassic Carpark Theatre of the 21st Century.

You do know that there are electric cars designed around Green Energy, right? Have you heard of Tesla?

No form of cinema can create an ambient cinematic experience that matches IMAX or even give you the gimmicky thrills of 4DX.

I also know that we have been talking about Green Energy via solar and wind for the last 40 years and are no nearer it now than we were in the 1980's.
Considering the push to get rid of fossil fuels, nuclear power and the coal industry, all of which contribute toward producing electricity, how are we going to generate the massive amount of electricity needed to power all those cars, in addition to the other necessities that rely on electrical current.
My earlier post was a lightly humorous response to drystyx. I did not intend to hijack this thread with a discussion better served on the political board, and there I exit the building.

I appreciate your sentiment but I don't see it happening. There are only 330 drive ins left, and I'm sure they all saw a major uptick in business over the past year, the one I go to sold out pretty much every weekend show in 2020 and they stayed open through Christmas into January, but in 2021 its pretty much back to reality, even the horror movie marathon they do every October wasn't a total sell out. Now, I agree there's something special about the drive-in, the same as there's something special about going to a classic theater that's been around since the 1920's or even ones that have simply kept the circa 1990's aesthetic. I honestly can't stand walking into a Cinemark, I feel like I'm walking into a Target, I really don't like any gimmicks that aren't related to what I'm experiencing on screen, whether that's reclining or moving chairs, being served food at my seat, self serve concession stands etc.
I think the reality we'll find is that in 20-30 years that the average home will have a TV that spans the length of an entire wall, they'll be so thin you'll be able to roll them up and stick them in a closet or take them outside, the big screen experience will be completely emulated from home and everything will be available to watch immediately and much cheaper than it is now. Resolution will be so advanced that you'll feel like your screen isn't just playing something, but a window into the world of the movie, we'll be in the onset of neural implants actually becoming a regular thing and nearly every movie will have a VR option just as 3D at home became a thing. As for theaters, I think they'll still be around, but they'll be going the way of malls in America, the big cities will still have them, the rich suburbs will still have them, but anywhere else, you'll just be expecting your local theater to be gone within a year. I think what we see as arthouse theaters now will more or less to something only found at an actual art museum or college campus.
This all sounds like a bummer of a prediction, but it doesn't have to be, just because the emphasis on going to the movies every weekend will be majorly reeled in, I think there will be an uptick in a lot of other forms of entertainment. I don't buy into the idea that we're heading towards a dystopian world where everyone is plugged into a machine experiencing life vicariously like you see in WALL-E, barring Covid-19 restrictions I think live entertainment are on the rise and will continue to be on the rise. I think watching new movies in theaters will be in major decline but think communal film experiences will be much more prevalent, I think film festivals will become a much bigger thing and not just reserved for the critics or film students, I think interactive movie experiences (think Riff Trax or Rocky Horror Picture Show) will become a bigger thing I think live theater will become a bigger thing. I think it's just a realignment of priorities more than it is an economic issue, I think going out will be in pursuit of a social, communal experience, and watching a movie will be a more personal, private experience.

Just say you want theaters to die and I’ll take you seriously. I’ve been seeing big crowds for a while. Just cause YOU don’t see them doesn’t mean SHIT!!! I’ll fucking laugh when theaters come back even stronger next year and you’ll be still talking about how they aren’t doing well!!! So I’ll tell you again: FUCK OFF!!! Why does it bother you Theaters are actually doing pretty well?

I’ll fucking laugh when theaters come back even stronger next year and you’ll be still talking about how they aren’t doing well!!! So I’ll tell you again: FUCK OFF!!! Why does it bother you Theaters are actually doing pretty well? You're either illiterate or lying. I never said I wanted movie theaters to die. Just because you want someone to say something, that doesn't mean he or she said whatever you want to control the words to be. You just pawned yourself. I said movie theaters will die out. I did say they were dull. I never said I wanted them to die out. I didn't "want" cobblers to lose business to companies that mass produced factory shoes, but that's what happened. It is what it is. The future is the future. You're the only one getting emotional about all this, which stands to reason from your tantrums. I hope your little movie theater does survive, so you can watch a movie all by yourself, or along with the ten other dorks who have to be the first to see a movie. I hope you can be an exclusive lot proud of your dork membership. And I'm sure there will be that one movie theater still available for the dorks in 2040, in every sixty square mile area. But be honest. They're doomed. No one but the dorks care about being the first person to see a new release. That's even the definition of "dork". No offense. I'm a jock for working out and keeping fit. I'm a nerd for reading real History and Science. I'm a freak for being creative. No reason to be sensitive about being a dork. Maybe you're right. Maybe there will be a surplus of dorks in 2040, but I doubt it. This is the age of the dork. This is the peak season of dorks. Your breed can enjoy that nostalgic feeling in 2030 or 2040 or 2050 when there's only a few dorks left, and you can either whine about being one of the only eleven people to watch a new release in a movie theater, or you can relish being part of an exclusive group.
