Some of the most fascinating films a director makes are the ones they do right after a big box office success. Thanks to their success and newfound box office clout, they can finally make a passion project they've put off with carte blanche, minimal studio interference, etc.
For example:
-Tim Burton making Edward Scissorhands after the success of Batman '89
-Steven Spielberg making Close Encounters after the success of Jaws
-Chris Nolan making Inception after the success of The Dark Knight

If those three films are what could be called fascinating then god help you.

Another example being Coppola directing The Conversation after the huge success of The Godfather.
