during the monday night wars? i think the obvious answer is the night it revealed Mankind was going to beat The Rock, WCW had been using tool of "telling folks what was gonna happen on Raw to their advantage for quite some time." but once they revealed a Mick Foley who was already a fan favorite with his Mankind persona was going to win his first ever WWF/WWE Championship WCW's main advantage backfired

Basically in 1989 the writing was on the wall. The only reason they lasted another 11 years was because that had a gazillion dollars they were willing to lose.

I'd say once it started trying to be WWE-lite. Essentially having the same types of risque programs and style of matches. WCW fans didn't want more WWE/F. They wanted an alternative. Russo and co. didn't understand that.
