Obviously this is ancient history now, but I stumbled across this comprehensive article on why it all fell apart. collider.com/edgar-wright-ant-man-production-problems-explained/Whedon actually called Wright’s script “the best Marvel ever had”! I definitely blame Marvel. They took a big risk on Gunn’s Guardians and it paid off. Should’ve done the same with Wright. Ant Man should be quirky and off beat, not the generic family comedy it became under Reed. Could’ve been a real gem instead of just another fun yet forgettable blockbuster.

I liked the Ant-Man movies. But I do wonder what it would had been like if they went with Edgar Wright's direction.

Are you sure it was him? There’s quotes from Feige (one in the article above) expressing his dissatisfaction with Wright not acquiescing to the studio notes. Also I think Perlimutter was gone by Phase Two, no?

Sounds like it was a united front against Wright having creative control.

Release the Wright cut?! lols
Honestly, I'm fine with the MCU wanting to begin steering all its boats towards Endgame starting with Ant-Man. I mean, it was Ant-Man after all, not some huge tentpole of a property. I actually really like the Ant-Man movie we got. Sure, it's family'ish oriented... and?
Face it, the fabric of the MCU was greater than the sum of its parts... veering off might've derailed our entire Infinity Saga payoffs.

I always enjoy rewatching The Avengers quadrilogy because they feel like genuine creative endeavors with big risks and big payoffs. A lot of the solo movies, especially in Phase 3-4, don’t come anywhere close to that standard. Consider if GotG had just been a fun family comedy. You may be defending that one instead, but look how much better it is with a unique director’s vision. Also: know that all the best ideas in the first Ant Man were from Wright’s script.

Bump
During a recent interview with The Playlist, Joe Cornish revealed the events that led to Wright's departure from the original film. Cornish said, "When Edgar and I first met Marvel, they were in offices above a BMW showroom in Beverly Hills. It was around the time of Ang Lee's 'Hulk,' and [Jon] Favreau hadn't even started working on the first 'Iron Man.' Superhero movies were not a thing... I guess because VFX hadn't evolved to the point where they could put what was on page on the screen. So, they always felt like they were reaching for something they couldn't achieve."
The screenwriter continued, "We worked on [Ant-Man] for something like eight years, on and off. And in that time, the landscape changed completely. The technology changed completely. Audiences fell in love with superhero movies. All the stuff that people loved in the '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s in comic books were suddenly translated on screen in a really direct way that had never happened before."
He finished by saying, "That kind of overtook us in the sense that Marvel didn't necessarily want the authored movie that Edgar and I wanted to make because, at that point, they had this behemoth on their hands. They had this universe where the movies had to integrate. Edgar is an auteur. Edgar Wright makes Edgar Wright movies. In the end, that's why it didn't happen, I guess."
