The recent King Arthur Legend of the Sword has received some critical drubbing. Although it was also sniffed at, I still have a weakness for an earlier film of this story, Antoine Fuqua's King Arthur from 2004, mainly I think for the Zimmer score and pitch-perfect casting of Ray Winstone. The new one seems to have David Beckham and a mis-cast Jude Law, among other things, working against it. Should I give the new one a try or stick with a perhaps more enjoyable earlier version? Boorman's Excalibur, from way back in 1981, I always find a struggle to enjoy, too.

EXCALIBUR is a visual treat, but I have an issue with Nicol Willimson as Merlin. I have never found him that great as an actor, in spite of his stage roots and never that appealing to watch. I also didn't think much of the actor playing Arthur. Excalibur is really hit and miss. Didn't bother with the other Arthur legend updates you mentioned, due to the PG13 quality of them. I quite like Williamson, once described by John Osborne no less as "the greatest actor since Marlon Brando".. He is excellent in that underrated Get Carter-like UK thriller for instance The Reckoning, and I thought him marvellous support in Lester's marvellous Robin and Marian, as Little John. But there's no doubting that the actor had some personal issues which detracted from his career.

I never liked Nicol Williamson . He's not a bad actor but somehow I always wanted to offer him a handkerchief so that he could blow his nose. I find very distracting whatever that is that is going on with his speech.
Avoid the filmed version of the stage production of Camelot. It's just "wrong" in so many ways.

I haven't seen the new King Arthur Legend Of The Sword yet . But I have heard Guy Ritchie had intended for it to be an ongoing movie series . Love the Arthur legend and try to watch any I can . Of course everyone knows the great Camelot (1967) and the classical Knights of the Round Table (1953) . I have a couple of later versions in my collection -
King Arthur (2004) with Clive Owen , Keira Knightley and a host of fun character actors . Strangely set around the northern Hadrian's Wall , and Arthur as the last Roman officer in Britain . Overall , well directed with some great action sequences .
The Last Legion (2007) with Colin Firth , Aishwarya Rai , Ben Kingsley , Kevin McKidd Yada..Yada Based on an outstanding novel by Valerio Manfredi and picked up by Producer Dino de Laurentiis Meant to be an A movie for the de Laurentiis Company but after extensive script changes , Well.. A movie that was meant to be an Epic , still has much to enjoy , but the budget faded near the end . Worth to see for the Actors and a Cheer from Us for Them trying to make it big !
Tristan and Isolde (2006) Although not technically an Arthur movie , it is based on a true legend recorded during the 5th Century AD . There are strong connections to the Arthur Legend here , and which were much later re-recorded stories . And it's sense of realism to the era makes it compelling to watch through . A very well produced and directed movie with a truly terrific cast in an Arthurian play !

I always had a soft spot for this one. The other ones people mentioned are fine except for King Arthur (2004). I loathe that one.
