After 12 years a Roger, we get a fresh start with Timothy Dalton. His Bond is certainly less glib than Moore but not quite as charismatic as Connery. Still, he does alright in the role.
Out of the five OO7s released in the 1980s, this is probably my favorite.
Quality title track from A-ha
When Bond kills Karl's brother from Die Hard, I quipped "he got the boot" thinking myself clever. This was quickly dispelled when Bond says the same thing moments later.
Like Rambo later helping the Afghans, hindsight is 20/20.
If Pierce Brosnan actually was able to play the role now and not later, can only imagine how the series might have gone.

Fairly alright, though Dalton's movies never felt like Bond to me & I didn't realize until the mid 90's they were when I started my franchise dive.

10/10 One of my least favorites when I first watched all the Bond films but I really liked it more upon rewatches. Now I love it.

It's one of my favorite installments in the series. Timothy Dalton made the role his own, even though humor is not his strongest suit. I love the international espionage angle and the title song by a-Ha.

Solid outing that takes itself more seriously than the later Roger Moore movies. Timothy Dalton stumbles a bit in the romance department but he's good as an action lead. Maryam d'Abo is not one of the more interesting Bond girls but she didn't annoy me. Joe Don Baker is funny as the weird arms dealer with statues of himself. Although I didn't consider him a threat to Timothy Dalton's 007 for a second.
Necros on the other hand is one of the best Bond henchmen. The action scenes are the best thing to recommend here. They are really well done. The fight scene on that cargo plane with them hanging on is brilliant. Hindsight regarding geopolitics aside, Art Malik was a good sidekick. Never thought I'd ever find myself drawn to Major Iceborg but here we are.

One of the weaker Bond movies in my opinion, but certainly not bad. It has started to grow on me.
The weak villains do hurt the movie though (Couldn't Bond have just shot Whitaker in the stomach or crotch instead of wasting bullets against the bulletproof visor?). "He met his Waterloo."
Never knew Karl's brother from "Die Hard" plays the blonde henchman.
Dalton had a flawed take on Bond, but he did have his strengths and was a refreshing tonic if you were growing tired of Moore by the end of his run.
Dalton hits his stride though with his next Bond film.

Love it. Heavily influenced by the fact I have had a lifelong crush on Timothy Dalton - but then I didn’t care for his second Biond film at all so it can’t be just that. Escape/ by cello is my favourite bit.

As I noted in another thread about this movie: I like Dalton's inaugural performance, but the story isn't the best. But maybe I'll revisit The Living Daylights sometime. I do own it on DVD as part of the James Bond Ultimate Collection. I read the original Ian Fleming short story not too long ago, and it did inspire me to revisit the film. I still enjoy Dalton's performance, but this picture is not fully tailored to his strengths. Some of the gags, e.g., the "ghetto blaster", seem held over from the Roger Moore era, and Bond's tricked out car was overdone for my taste. Regardless, this movie is good enough to deserve a quote thread of its own. James Bond Movie Quote Adventures Subject | Movie Title | Created By | Created On |
