Just watched this excellent PBS Documentary about the first successful cross country road trip from San Francisco to New York. I never thought about the obstacles that you would face in 1903. No roads (they never encountered a paved road until they reached Omaha). Hell, no road maps. No gas stations. No mechanics. No ordinary stuff like air, motor oil. No tires, they had one spare and got had to use in in Oakland. Many streams weren't bridged (streams that could easily be crossed by a wagon but not so easily by a car). The trip to 63 days and Horatio Jackson won $50. Cool documentary
