Todd Philips calling the shots now?
TEXT:
A major shakeup at Warner Bros. Discovery has CEO David Zaslav eyeing Joker director Todd Phillips for an important role at DC Films. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Executives Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy are being brought in by the Warner Bros. Discovery CEO the WB and New Line verticals after departing MGM. With De Luca and Abdy coming in, Toby Emmerich would step down from running WB and New Line. In one of the more surprising moves, Zaslav has reportedly asked Todd Phillips to serve as an advisor to DC Films, though the Joker director won't have any executive duties. Sources went on to state how Zaslav and Phillips have built a rapport, which could be one of the leading factors for the rumored interest in the director's increased services across Warner Bros. Discovery's DC Films output. The report goes on to state how Zaslav is looking to create three distinct verticals for the company, with each having its own leadership up top. One vertical would see De Luca and Abdy over Warner Bros.-New Line, with DC and Animation as the other two verticals. Part of the restructuring will reportedly see DC Films President Walter Hamada report directly to De Luca and Abdy until new leadership can be found. Zaslav has consulted with former Disney studio chairman Alan Horn and former Disney CEO Bob Iger for tips on navigating multiple verticals and executive producers at a company. While Disney has Kevin Feige overseeing Marvel's film, television, and comic output, DC doesn't have one guiding voice to help steer the ships. Whereas every Marvel project is tied together in one cohesive universe, DC has taken the approach of letting its filmmakers have the autonomy to tell stories that don't have to be so closely connected, such as Joker and Matt Reeves' The Batman. Todd Phillips is reportedly working on the script for a Joker sequel, with THR noting that "Todd Phillips struck a deal to co-write the next Joker installment," in a May 2021 article. A disappointing update came almost a year later in March 2022 when The Ankler reported work on the script for Joker 2 has slowed. Per the report, it's not clear what the issue is, but Phillips, who is also writing the film, has not yet turned in a draft of the sequel. With filming rumored to start as soon as early 2023, the current reported delay may not have much of an impact at all film production — but that could change if the delay goes on too long.

That would had been quite a shakeup. "....Zaslav could make another run at Feige, who, I’m told, talked pretty seriously with Warners a few years ago when he was angling to escape the oversight of Marvel’s then-madman C.E.O. Ike Perlmutter. (Iger and Horn ended up siding with Feige, smartly.)" screenrant.com/dc-kevin-feige-marvel-leave-mcu-report-details/

On Friday, Toby Emmerich had a meal with Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy at the Polo Lounge, a hub of deal-making and power lunches, in a move that was clearly designed to send a signal of solidarity to Hollywood. The bread-breaking, which went down as show business players like producer Donald De Line and CAA agent Joel Lubin dined nearby, came just a day after Emmerich announced that he will step down as head of Warner Bros.’ film studio. De Luca, who worked with Emmerich back in the day at New Line, and Abdy will soon join the company, though in a reduced role; they will oversee Warner Bros. and New Line but will not have control over Warner Bros. Animation and DC Films.
But there might be more on the menu. De Luca and Abdy have told people they expect to have input in what DC does in film and television. However, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav still hopes to find his answer to Kevin Feige, the guru who guided Marvel Studios to big-screen dominance for rival Disney. Zaslav already approached Emma Watts, a veteran Fox and Paramount executive, about the job, but the talks collapsed. Insiders say that no announcement about a DC chief is imminent.
As he navigates the film world, Zaslav has relied extensively on the insight of a constellation of industry players, such as former Disney chief Bob Iger and CAA head Bryan Lourd, polling them about his plans to reshape the studio. He is also in talks with former Disney film chief and Warner Bros. leader Alan Horn about becoming a consultant.
The courtship of Watts means Walter Hamada, the current president of DC Films production, has an uncertain future, even though he remains under contract until 2023. Zaslav believes that DC is an under-utilized asset. He’s frustrated that its cinematic output has been inconsistent and that there hasn’t been sufficient long-term planning in terms of rolling out sequels and follow-ups to popular movies. Supporters of Hamada believe the executive hasn’t received enough credit. Under his leadership, the studio scored massive hits with “Aquaman” and “The Batman,” the latter earning the comic book label’s best reviews since Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight.” They also note that DC has moved more aggressively into multi-platform storytelling, creating spinoff shows out of characters like Peacemaker and Penguin.
Whoever takes over the division will face challenges, including the fate of Superman. Henry Cavill, who played the part in “Man of Steel” and other films, is aging out of the role, and the studio has yet to finalize plans for the Superman film that was being developed with a script from acclaimed author Ta-Nehisi Coates.
As for Emmerich, he’s in a new position. As part of his exit package, he scored a production deal. But that means he will now be sitting on the other side of the table at pitch meetings. In many cases, the faces that will be staring back at him will belong to his Friday lunch companions — De Luca and Abdy.

As reported by Puck, sources claim that Warner Bros. will be initiating layoffs on a rolling basis between the beginning of August and Labor Day, starting with smaller groups. Those layoffs will continue exponentially throughout September and October and are intended to finish before Oct. 31 as a way to deal with the "bloat" at Warner Bros., which has been noted by those coming from Discovery following the merger of the two companies. Layoffs will reportedly include marketing, PR, distribution, sales, legal and creative, though one source states that most departments at Warner Bros. will be affected. The intention seems to be to reduce costs overall, with one business leader calling the reductions "painful" and "to the bone."
Warner Bros. Discovery recently revealed the details of its second financial quarter, revealing that the company had taken a net loss of $3.4 billion, with $1 billion attributed to the restructuring costs of the merger. It was also detailed that the studio had lost $825 million on content and $208 million on employee termination.
This news comes after reports that Warner Bros. movies would no longer be guaranteed to hit streaming after a strict 45-day theatrical release window. While it was initially the plan for Warner Bros. to send all of its films to HBO Max in 2022 after 45 days in theaters, sources state that the company will now decide when these films will be sent to streaming on a "case-by-case basis." Despite the rumored layoffs, this report came after Warner Bros. Discovery President and CEO David Zaslav, who stepped into the role in April, revealed that the company would be increasing its budget for HBO Max in order to produce new series and content.
"Quality is what matters," Zaslav said. "Quality is what [Chief Content Officer] Casey [Bloys] and that team is delivering. It’s the best team in the business. We’re doubling down on that HBO team. They’re all committed under contract and we’re going to spend dramatically more this year and next year than we spent last year in the year before." It was also revealed during Warner Bros. Discovery's Q2 earnings call on Aug 4. that the company would be merging HBO Max and discovery+ into a combined streaming service by summer 2023.

Sounds like they’re running a tight ship over there.

Sound extremely expensive. Don't really need an event to do a reboot. Just start over.

I guess that's why we hadn't heard updates about these projects:
"....Hamada was planning to release three to four DC movies a year, including Secret Six, a movie about a villainous team who have typically been portrayed as rivals to the Suicide Squad in the comics.
...
Among the projects that development is said to have "slowed" on are Supergirl, Green Lantern Corps, Static Shock, and J.J. Abrams and Ta-Nehisi Coates' Superman movie."

Despite there already being a head of DC Films, Walter Hamada, it would appear that Warner Bros. Discovery is actively seeking someone to fill this "Feige" inspired role, and one name being considered is TV producer Greg Berlanti. In a new report from Variety, the trade reveals that Berlanti "has been loudly whispered as a possibility for the role," but no official discussions between WBD and Berlanti's team have occurred.

I think it’s their way of keeping Gal and Mamoa in canon. But it’s still a terrible idea. It needs a reboot- just reboot the m*****f***r!
