I have to say this was better than I thought it would be. Everyone is obsessed with the cameos, to me they were the least interesting part of the movie. They were a cute wink to the audience, but I'm glad the film didn't revolve around them the way the hype would have you believe.
Despite the concept of the multiverse being explored, this was actually a very personal, self-contained story for Strange as well as Wanda. America too, though she became a background character as the movie went along. For my money this was a better movie than the first Strange. Clever use of magic, particularly in the third act, reminds you of how awesome this character can be. I think it's my favorite phase four movie so far.

I don't like where they took Wanda. I always liked her & Vision in the comics. Its not a 10. Definitely prefer the first Strange movie I really appreciate how it feels more loyal to the comics, though, which is good & bad in that comics have been whoring themselves out for years just to sell a couple issues. It feels like Wanda is doing the Dark Phoenix turn since Marvel didn't have the rights to the XMen when they introduced her in Ultron. She is, in fact, like she has never advanced from that. She is very much in the mess with Hulk's mind mode-anything to get her objective, including killing anyone in her way. My kid noticed Strange is like a dad-took care of Peter & of America which is what I always liked about him in The Defenders. He cared. He has been on the cold side in the MCU. It is worth it. I saw it with my kid yesterday & will pay to see it with my sister Tuesday. Why would the multiverse be difficult for kids? They have the ability to read different versions of the same fairy tale, so just explaing it before if you think it will be an issue. I was a kid in the 60s. We had Batman. Man from UNCLE, Wild Wild West, 20 different westerns, guest stars who got killed on different shows the same week... It's make-believe. If your kid doesn't understand that, that is the greater issue. Hell, how many Hulks have there been? 4? Are we counting the cartoon ones? This isn't Drag Me To Hell. It is Raimi. My kid thought I was crazy saying it was clean, but it was. I probably meant pure. Raimi can push it (Evil Dead), but it's not grimdark oppressive. It's not pick up a severed arm spurting blood to beat someone with it. One of the Illuminati gets chopped in half. You do not see any of it, you can just tell by the reaction of the victim & the way the body falls. One could even see a child not realizing that's what happened. It doesn't come close to Deadpool level blood What about Black Bolt’s death? I’ve seen people say it’s really violent. I may not be the best judge on the matter. I tool my kid to see the R-rated Halloween H2O when it came put 2 months before my kid turned 8. You have to know your kid & what the kid can handle. I knew Michael Myers was more Gore than sex so I was OK with it. I told my kid if there were any questions, ask. If it was too much, we could leave. The 2 questions were special effects-a knife going into an arm & the light inside the body. I explained it was fake. Most likely rubber body parts, but maybe a knife where the blade went into the handle. All of the violence was Raiders of the lost ark like quick & done. Yes, Bolt had his own power turned on himself, but somehow Reed's felt a bit more violent as it was more torture before exploding. It really is not worse than Strange dying how many times at the end of the first movie? Is it because it's Raimi people are freaking out?

Do they explain the deal with Wanda’s kids? In the show they weren’t real right? Just temporary creations in her hex? I kind of blocked out that whole series immediately after binging it. I’m assuming this movie reintroduces her motives in a fresh way that doesn’t rely too heavily on whatever went on in that show. Depends on the person i suppose. Went with my Sis and Niece. Neither had seen WandaVision yet. Told them I could give them a recap real quick but they were like nah the movie will probably take care of it. You get a couple of lines here and there where they weren't real that they came from a spell. And you get a line or two about Westview. Afterwards the kid rolled with the punches and was able to grasp almost everything as if she watched the show. The Sis completely lost for most of the movie. It was only after the discussion over IHOP afterwards that things clicked. The last time either saw Wanda. She was optimistic that Vision and Nat saw they won and she was coping. Next time she was trying to kill a child to get children she never had, using ruins spell books when before it ewas basically just a power not shown as witch craft, burning thru and destroying nature, speaking off kilter, had a full fledged costume and was calling herself the Scarlet Witch so yeah little bit of a shock.

Who else had a standing O when the hover wheel chair came on screen? Well tech I think the O started with the musical flourish that accompanied his entrance... Nope. The audience went insane a minute earlier when Krazinski appeared. X was kinda expected when Stewart's cameo was announced. I was not happy no Namor. When I heard Illuminati named I hoped Namor would be there. Boo. Hiss. Liked the Beuce Campbell cameo. Didn't like what they did with Wanda. Ohmygodclea!!!!!! My kid was "Charlize Theron!" While I was "white hair. Purple!" So I love McAdams as Christine, but I could see why they ended it. Strange is supposed to be with Clea. There was a massive Cheer for John/Reed but looking back on it I think it was more of the open theme of the Cartoon orchestral flourish that sparked people getting to their feet.

Even having seen the show I’m really hoping this movie will stand on its own. Connecting to previous films is one thing but I honestly don’t like the idea of this one being so tied into a tv show- particularly one I found to be instantly forgettable. My head canon will probably just exclude WV so I hope the exposition on her works in this movie enough to justify her actions/transformation without feeling too awkward.

So reintroduced the X-Men leader and and the leader of Fantastic Four just to kill them off? Reintroduced a "version" of those characters. And yes, killed them. But that's the point of the multiverse. There are many separate versions. My guess is that John Krasynski will return as the Reed Richards of the main movies (confirmed yet?), and they will get a new younger actor to play any future versions of Professor X.

This film was awesome!
It brought the horror
It brought the multiverse fun
And most importantly it brought the RAIMINESS!
Make sure you stay for the 2nd credit scene too!
10/10

Something just occurred to me which has probably been covered by a hundred media outlets by now. This movie is about Wanda trying to find her children; its subtitle, the Multiverse of Madness, was referred to as MoM in media and message board shorthand; and it was released on Mother's Day weekend.
Very clever, so who do we clap for? Raimi? Feige?

I do love how this movie seemed to definitely quash the notion that the MCU is the same multiverse as the comics. I always hated that idea, and I never understood the point of it, outside of giving the comics an excuse to try and leech off the movies.

B+
High highs, alas some mediocre lows for me too...
+ - I really liked the horror aspects of it all. I'd always heard fans of the comics had been clambering for that for this MCU Dr. Strange, & for me, they didn't disappoint. Even if they were admittedly pulling their punches just enough to keep it PG-13. - The actual depictions of multiverse was also handled quite well, for my expectations. Fun, weird, silly, strange, brooding... & yet not too much of any. - Sorcerer vs Witch was cool throughout. Olson was pretty tremendous, carrying most of the weird stuff rather solidly. That stuff could've been goofy, it wasn't, she bought it & delivered. It's a shame Scarlet Witch wasn't at least co-headlining in the film's title. - All in all, I was quite entertained by most of its visuals & major plot points. I had set myself up putting it on a pedestal as if this would feel a major MCU tentpole chapter... it didn't feel quite that, & yet I'm still putting it top half MCU. I guess I was more expecting grand macro universe stakes than trying to reconcile Wanda stuff. Then again, the mid-credit tease maybe seems we're on that major path anyways.
- - The 2nd 5th of the film if you will, I wasn't feeling it at all. That stretch of conventional stuff wasn't doing anything for me, not least this America Chavez girl's intro. She just felt like some Disney fangirl dropped into the MCU & I'm supposed to care? We're a long way from Tony Stark rolling up to AC/DC... a long, way. I did like her backstory though, her Spanish, 2 mothers, & not being some cocky hotshot was redeeming for me. She's a female Ned for me. There, I said it. She's the new Ned. - The cameo stuff for what it was didn't feel all that special, considering we're talking about one of an infinite number of universes. Until Wolverine carves someone's face off in this universe with stakes at play, the gravitas wasn't quite there. Xavier was a pleasant treat though - they handled him with dignity & gave him something very cool to do. His matrix style moment with Wanda was boss, & I'm glad we have that, fan service or not.

So what I want to know is... where does everyone rank this movie against other MCU movies? This is probably at my #13 or so. My highest hopes had it cracking my top 10, yet it wasn't enough of a credible ensemble tentpole chapter for me there. It's very good, just below great.
