Here we go again. Star Wars "fans" treat the series like it's some sacred text and target the filmmaker(s) or actor(s) for some perceived wrongdoing on their part, so it's not completely born from racism or sexism. Daisy Ridley, who is white, was also harassed online and she self-deleted her social media accounts. She has since returned. Rian Johnson also received some hateful tweets.

I don't mean to be that person but doesn't any of this sound somewhat suspect? This story breaks at the same time as the release of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, and Disney/Lucasfilm are going fully in defense mode telling anyone who has issue with this actress or their character that they are not desired as consumers. It comes across as a marketing strategy to paint any critic of this series and the new direction of the property at large as having inferior opinions. This presentation also feels like an attempt to appear virtuous to deflect from any criticism of the mishandling of John Boyega and Kelly Marie Tran's characters and the frustrating atmosphere as described by Boyega in an interview or two. Not only that but shrinking Finn on the international posters for The Force Awakens, which has been pointed out several times over by consumers online. Also, this whole narrative of there being racist Star Wars fans seems pretty exaggerated in the conversation - I don't recall anyone having a problem with Rosario Dawson being Ahsoka (To be honest, the only thing people were upset about was the accusation that she and her family mistreated a trans person), Sasha Banks being part of Bo Katan's Nite Owls, Samuel L. Jackson as Mace Windu, James Earl Jones voicing Darth Vader, Donald Glover or Billy Dee Williams as Lando, Boba Fett being played by an actor of Maori, Scottish, and Irish background, Ming-Na Wen as Fennec Shand, The Mandalorian being played by Chilean-American actor in Pedro Pascal, etc. I saw a user here (don’t remember who, maybe Power Ranger) call her a "diversity hire" so I wouldn’t be surprised at all if it was real. If she was chosen to add diversity to the cast then she was indeed by definition a diversity hire.

I don't know how that claim in itself can be racist. It's an unfounded claim, but it could be true. People who use terms like "diversity hire" when talking about an actor/actress usually do because diversity in entertainment doesn’t please them. Wrong. It’s when it doesn’t work that it displeases me. If you think I don’t like diverse casting then you’re wrong. If there is a character that sucks who was a diversity hire, don’t you think that was a bad decision? There is nothing wrong with the actress. Just the person who casted her for that particular role. I may warm to her, but so far I felt more from The Grand Inquisitor, and I suspect that most others did as well.

Minority performers are not immune from criticism. As for racist messages, if you knew how often racist hate crimes turn out to be hoaxes, you would want to have hard evidence first. Plus hundreds of DMs? Potentially from people with multiple accounts? So a very small percentage of fans? That’s not a story. I bet that most actresses get hundreds of sexually explicit DMs. But that wouldn’t make any fandom perverted. And the fact that they’re beating this up so much makes me think that they know that they have a stinker of a show and are trying to win the PR battle early. In fact, it’s almost as though they’re inviting more attention from trolls 🤔

The difference is those characters were originally white so I think the criticism is valid. I don’t know too much about the character in Star Wars, was she originally white? The character is a creation of the show, but is speculated to be a gender-swapped version of Darth Revan from the EU and appeared in a deleted scene in The Clone Wars animated series. LOL! If her character is supposed to be based on a female version of Darth Revan… it’s so far off of the mark that it’s laughable. There’s hardly any correlation there. (Insert face palm here)

As far as the subject of this thread, don’t know whether the actress is getting genuine racist attacks or not. Could be true. Could be baited labeling of people who are criticizing the character or writing around the character (calling them racist for it). Until I see some real examples of it and some context it’s just a claim.

It doesn’t mean it’s a story. Plus some idiots will just inject racism into fan hatred. It doesn’t mean that the hatred is due to race. On sledging, a famous sportsman from my country said ‘you can call them a bastard, just not a black bastard’.

That doesn't necessarily make the person uses the term racist though, a person can criticize the casting of an actor or actress in a role as being a result of political reasons and not because they bring anything of value other than the appearance of inclusivity in a product. Political reasons for the casting or not, I doubt someone complaining about a black actor/actress being cast in something doesn’t have a single racist bone in their body. I had a problem with Tessa Thompson being cast as Valkyrie, and that was definitely a diversity hire. Taika Waititi said he specifically wanted to cast a black actress for the role to introduce more diversity. But just because I had issues with her casting doesn't mean I'm racist. I had a problem with her as Valkyrie because she's freaking tiny and too young for the part. That doesn't make me racist.

Oh don't get me wrong, I love Tessa Thompson. She looks even better in the recent Thor Love and Thunder trailer. It just bothered me that she was hired to play Valkyrie who's an exceptionally tall, muscular woman who's roughly twice Thor's age according the events of the MCU.

Well, my issue was that the MCU (or Waititi) was so concerned about casting a black actress ("for diversity's sake") that they didn't pay attention to the rest of her physical attributes. Her being black was not an issue for me, but her being a diversity hire was. That said, it doesn't stop me from actually liking Tessa Thompson as an actress.

Portman definitely looks like she physically prepared for her role in the next one. Wish Thompson had done the same. Natalie is jacked, yo!

The internet is full of horrible people so unfortunately people will receive hate filled attacks. It should be condemned, of course. But Disney posting about it as though it’s a common thing amongst fans is kind of insulting. There are people who are not racist, who don’t harass the cast, and also happen to dislike what the company has done with this franchise. Honestly, I feel like they’re only doing this to boost ratings. Did they tell China to stop being racist? No, they took Finn off of the poster. Lame.

Remember when racist Star War fans attacked Rosario Dawson for playing Ahsoka Tano?
I don't.

This strategy helped TLJ make over a billion dollars. They know exactly what they’re doing.

I have no doubt she's gotten some shit for her skin color. Just from the dog whistling people do in the open, you know it must get pretty nasty when the masks come off in private.
That said, she's terrible in this show. Like, laughably bad.
