Why does anyone even bother getting involved with Star Wars anymore? It doesn’t seem to be worth the fan outrage.

Why does anyone even bother getting involved with Star Wars anymore? It doesn’t seem to be worth the fan outrage. Because why not? Star Wars is one of the most iconic brands in culture that still holds artistic merit after all these years.

I don't mean to be that person but doesn't any of this sound somewhat suspect? This story breaks at the same time as the release of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, and Disney/Lucasfilm are going fully in defense mode telling anyone who has issue with this actress or their character that they are not desired as consumers. It comes across as a marketing strategy to paint any critic of this series and the new direction of the property at large as having inferior opinions. This presentation also feels like an attempt to appear virtuous to deflect from any criticism of the mishandling of John Boyega and Kelly Marie Tran's characters and the frustrating atmosphere as described by Boyega in an interview or two. Not only that but shrinking Finn on the international posters for The Force Awakens, which has been pointed out several times over by consumers online. Also, this whole narrative of there being racist Star Wars fans seems pretty exaggerated in the conversation - I don't recall anyone having a problem with Rosario Dawson being Ahsoka (To be honest, the only thing people were upset about was the accusation that she and her family mistreated a trans person), Sasha Banks being part of Bo Katan's Nite Owls, Samuel L. Jackson as Mace Windu, James Earl Jones voicing Darth Vader, Donald Glover or Billy Dee Williams as Lando, Boba Fett being played by an actor of Maori, Scottish, and Irish background, Ming-Na Wen as Fennec Shand, The Mandalorian being played by Chilean-American actor in Pedro Pascal, etc.

I'd hate to find out this was a PR stunt, but it also wouldn't surprise me.

That doesn't necessarily make the person uses the term racist though, a person can criticize the casting of an actor or actress in a role as being a result of political reasons and not because they bring anything of value other than the appearance of inclusivity in a product.

People who use terms like "diversity hire" when talking about an actor/actress usually do because diversity in entertainment doesn’t please them. That's the assumption. But I'm not going to say the claim is a racist statement based on that alone.

Political reasons for the casting or not, I doubt someone complaining about a black actor/actress being cast in something doesn’t have a single racist bone in their body.

Political reasons for the casting or not, I doubt someone complaining about a black actor/actress being cast in something doesn’t have a single racist bone in their body. But let's assume that the person complaining about a black actor/actress in a specific role for a specific production is also black, would they be racist in their criticism, especially if it's just a statement like, "you are a diversity hire"? There are people who are black who didn't approve of the casting of Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in 2015's Fantastic Four and don't approve of Halle Bailey being Ariel in the upcoming remake of The Little Mermaid, as well as didn't approve of Jodie Turner-Smith being Anne Boyelyn, who unlike Johnny Storm and Ariel was a real person.

The difference is those characters were originally white so I think the criticism is valid. I don’t know too much about the character in Star Wars, was she originally white?

The character is a creation of the show, but is speculated to be a gender-swapped version of Darth Revan from the EU and appeared in a deleted scene in The Clone Wars animated series.
