...pretentious or pseudointellectual? I often hear this a mocking riddicule towards arthouse/indie films ("Oh you don't like Transformers 4? Then why you just go watch your pretentious arthouse films instead!"), but I'm curious if there even are a ton of indie films that people would describe like that.

I'm not one of those people who floats unpopular hot takes for the sake of it. I get nothing from kicking hornets nests. My preference is why I like movies than why I dislike them. That said, I'm one of not many people I know who was just completely and utterly not seduced by Donnie Darko.
Donnie Darko: Why are you wearing that bunny suit?
Rabbit: Why are you wearing that man suit?

Donnie Darko: Why are you wearing that bunny suit?
Rabbit: Why are you wearing that man suit?
Me: Well you see that quote was actually a Marxist critique of free market capitalism/neoliberalism that was rising during the 1980s under Reagan, the Rabbit was essentially commenting on Donnie Darko's complacency with (and by proxy tacit support) of capitalism taking away one's individuality (just another "man" part of the system) and essentially a complacent pawn of the borgoeois's increasing control over society and...aah fuck it I give up, yeah I dunno it probably was just a silly goofy scene that didn't really mean anything.

I personally try to avoid using the term "pretentious" as it sounds lazy and kneejerk.
Instead I'd say "that film was interesting/unique/ambitious and tried to do something removed from traditional filmmaking, but in this case I just didn't like it/it didn't work for me"
One film I'd describe that way would be Jodorowsky's The Holy Mountain.

I was gonna say The Holy Mountain as well, and while I might be wary to apply "pretentious" to movies for similar reasons, after seeing Jodorowsky's Dune I have little doubt the guy loves the smell of his own farts.

The most annoying responses you could possibly hear. Yup, because I don't like Michael Bay's terrible Transformers movies must mean I am a pretentious bore. The person saying it is making a big assumption that just because someone doesn't like the Transformers sequels that they don't like other mindless entertainment movies. To answer your question, Sleeping Beauty (2011) is almost unwatchable. Raw is probably the most tedious arthouse movie I have ever seen though.

Donnie Darko: Why are you wearing that bunny suit?
Rabbit: Why are you wearing that man suit?
Me: I actually take that line as being intentionally humorous. I am not much of a fan of Donnie Darko, but I don't have a problem with that specific exchange.

The Lighthouse (2019). Artsy-fartsy--sometimes literally.

Roma Frances Ha
(thinking if it's in black and white, and if it's slow, it must be "art" -- no, it's derivative of an earlier shitty movie)
