The battle to adapt Jurassic Park to screen started and ended before the novel even came out. Steven Spielberg was in touch with Michael Crichton while the author was still working on the book, and he got the people at Universal bidding for the rights. Also in the bidding were Warner Bros., who would have put Tim Burton at the helm, and Columbia, who'd have picked Richard Donner.
James Cameron was in the mix too. He came within hours of winning the rights, he claims. He says it's for the best that Spielberg got the job, though. Cameron would have made a much more grown-up picture, while Jurassic Park worked well in Spielberg's hands because "dinosaurs are for eight-year-olds." This statement of Cameron's is what is known as a humblebrag, as well as a left-handed compliment.

Also, Billy Wilder almost directed Schindler's List.

Tim Burton’s Jurassic Park. Yeah… that’s a no on that one.

Also, Billy Wilder almost directed Schindler's List. Wilder's the only one who could have made the movie as well as Spielberg IMO. Scorsese was also attached to direct it at one point.

Not sure if it's true or not but I heard somewhere that Cameron intended to cast Schwarzenegger as Grant and Linda Hamilton as Sattler.

Cameron wanted to make it R rated. I probably would have liked it better, but it would have never made as much money.

You think you're so creative. You don't know what it's like to really create something; to create a life; to feel it growing inside you. All you know how to create is death and destruction...

But I’m glad Steven Spielberg directed Jurassic Park instead. It would probably had just been Aliens except with dinosaurs. Granted, things become a bit Aliens-lite when the velociraptors break out. But it’s still got that Spielbergian sense of wonder and showmanship sprinkled throughout.

Mildly intrigued to see how Donner’s would’ve turned out.

Team of hunters vs dinosaurs with the sequel master at the helm. TLW had a darker tone that didn't really feel right with Spielberg.

Stalag 17 is one of those movies that make Nazi POW camps look like the set of Meatballs, with slightly meaner counselors. I haven't seen much of his later work, but I'd wonder if he ever went beyond that lightly funny, none too harrowing golden age edge.

Mildly intrigued to see how Donner’s would’ve turned out. Mel Gibson as Alan Grant, Danny Glover as John Hammond, and Joe Pesci as Ian Malcom:
"John, the kind of fucking control you're attempting here is, uh, it's not fucking possible. If there's one thing that the fucking history of evolution has taught us, it's that life will not be fucking contained. Life fucking breaks free. Expands to new fucking places and crashes through barriers. Fucking painfully, perhaps even dangerously. But... uh well, there it fucking is. Life fucking finds a way."

Is it any darker than Temple of Doom? Doom is violent, but fairly goofy. Short Round and Willie are borderline cartoon characters. But TLW has an almost nihilistic tone. The kind of movie where the most sympathetic character does the right thing and gets gruesomely ripped in half for his troubles. Eh.

I agree that Stalag 17 is a more lighthearted romp than it has a right to be. But he also directed Sunset Blvd., The Lost Weekend and Ace in the Hole, three extremely cynical and harrowing films.

Cameron finally has his own trilogy. No need to play in someone elses' sandbox.
