Usually considered one of Martin Scorsese's worst movies, and the worst of his collaborations with Robert De Niro. But even Scorsese at his worst is better than some directors at their best. And Scorsese at his worst isn't really that bad. Apparently, some problems involve Scorsese's directing being compromised by a drug problem at the time, and his difficulty of putting a movie narrative together for a musical film with so much improvisation going on. Going up against "Star Wars" didn't do the movie any favors. But the movie has its fans like any other Scorsese movie. Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review: New York, New York (1977) - 1.5 out of 4 stars"Elaborate but off-putting musical drama loosely based on THE MAN I LOVE; saxophonist De Niro and vocalist Minelli love and fight with each other right through the big band era. Some people consider this film extraordinary, but we're not among them; kudos, though, to production designer Boris Leven, music arranger Ralph Burns, and the Kander-Ebb title song. Initially released at 153m., then cut to 137m., and finally reissued in 1981 at current length with splashy "Happy Endings" number (featuring Larry Kert) added."

It's not one of Scorsese's best, but I like it. Minnelli is good and De Niro is even better.

I liked it for what it was. Jimmy Doyle (De Niro's character) was a bit of a jerk and shared no chemistry with Francine (Minnelli's character). It makes sense at the end they don't end up together. In the end, it's a movie that's easily overshadowed by the title song. I always like to think of La La Land as a remake of this film.

Someone once opined that De Niro was an actor who based his entire career on playing thoroughly reprehensible characters. His performance in this movie certainly fits that description. I saw it during its theatrical run and remember fighting to stay awake. Haven't had the notion to see it again.

Haven’t seen it. I’ve read Scorsese was battling a coke addition during production.

I admire it from a filmmaking perspective, and there's clearly a lot of passion on Scorsese's part for the old school musicals. It's certainly a gorgeous-looking movie.
That said, the runtime is excessive, and as previously mentioned the De Niro character is just a reprehensible prick. It's really hard to care too much about the romance when he treats poor Liza Minelli like absolute dogsh*t pretty much from the word go.
