in your opinion? I know the word gets thrown around a lot and is often overused, but if you had to apply it one film, what would it be?
For me The Dark Knight, which I do like but don't think it's even close to being one of the greatest movies ever made.

The Dark Knight is not over rated. Its probably the best movie in its genre and has tremendous acting and directing throughout. Its rightfully highly acclaimed.
Theres not an obvious answer when it comes to whats the most over rated movie of all time now that I think about it. I was going to say Citizen Kane but then I would be contradicting myself with the Dark Knight example because Kane is still technically a solid movie. I cant think of a good enough answer.

It just plays like a standard action thriller to me, elevated by Ledger's performance and the Batman brand name. So yeah, in my opinion it's overrated. Remember you can't exactly prove your opinion right when it comes to movies.

I dislike using the term overrated, because it is self-indulgent.
The movie I like the least that is highly praised is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. Very dull conclusion to the franchise imo.

Very dull conclusion to the franchise imo. Yes, I certainly agree with that. Glad we agree. With most movies that are on critics lists of the greatest movies ever made I can usually find something to admire about those movies. There isn't much I admire about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, with the exception of some of the visual effects.

I'd agree with kolchak92, I've always thought it was just a well-done crime drama that happened to have Batman as its cop...nothing more, nothing less. Very good movie to be sure, but certainly not deserving of all the praise that's heaped upon it. For my money, I enjoyed Batman Begins more. I also agree with his list of action thrillers that were better.

The Princess Bride. Saw it for the first time as an adult after years of hearing how great it was, and I didn't think it was anything special.

Citizen Kane...having just watched it...I don't think it holds up. I mean it holds up as a drama about a mans life I guess, but it doesn't hold up as the greatest film ever made like it was made out to be.
There Will Be Blood...Im a Day Lewis fan...but this movie was boring.

There are certain movies who's magic are most likely lost if you don't see them as a child. It's unfortunate. I feel this way about The Goonies. I didn't see it until I was in my 20s and by then I was like 'its fine' but I know if it had saw it when I was 10 it might be a staple of my childhood, moviewise.

That's fair...and I'm sure to people solely interested in the technicality and history of film it's really cool to see. But as a person who is mostly interested in story and character this one felt kind of bland. Again not terrible. But not one I intend to revisit anytime soon.

The Dark Knight is definitely overrated. Ledger gave a great performance as the Joker, but outside of that nothing really stood out in the movie. Still a good movie, just not great.
Plot was decent but nothing special. Relationships between characters were there but not especially developed. Fight scenes were completely forgettable. Bale was solid as Batman/Wayne but we didn't really get to know him the same way we did in Batman Begins.
There are other superhero movies out there that have more than surpassed TDK since it first came out, yet I feel like people are still stuck with nostalgia and keep referring to it as the best cbm of all time. Heck, I'd say Batman Begins was better than TDK.

I hate the term overrated. It's an empty and lazy criticism that just feels like the person saying it thinks their opinion is fact and anyone who disagrees is wrong.
