I hate the term overrated. It's an empty and lazy criticism that just feels like the person saying it thinks their opinion is fact and anyone who disagrees is wrong. Agreed. Nothing to do with the movie, everything to do with popularity. Overrated or even underrated says nothing about a movie. If anything, overrated just means resenting something that's popular, which is a valid emotion, but still has nothing to do with the movie.

The Shawshank Redemption
Sure, it's a good movie to look at, glossy and entertaining, with all the usual prison cliches intact and way over long. Elevated by its fanboys far beyond its worth.

The Dark Knight is my favorite movie so I’ll disagree with the OP.
Parasite might be the one for me. Watched it and liked it, but it’s harmless. A first half that plays like a lighthearted comedy (with few actual laughs) and a second half that is too slow until it ends right as it’s getting good.
I need to rewatch it, but I just don’t see much to love other than that cinematography in the second half, which is incredible.

I'd say Joker. Don't get me wrong it's pretty decent. It nods, winks and tips the hat so much to Taxi Driver and King of Comedy, watch them instead.
That's the thing, there are a lot of people who only watch new movies.

I'm in the "I hate the term overrated" club. But a couple films people go ga-ga over and I do not see the love
Avatar Fight Club Gladiator Braveheart
Forrest Gump was mentioned before. I liked the premise but I got tired of it about 1/3 of the way in the movie. Avatar and Gladiator would be my best examples
pretty much all Comic Book films. Not my cup of tea.

Oh and Ferris Bueller. He was a spoiled, smug twat that manipulated his friend and I'm supposed to root for him?

I don't think most people are saying "my opinion is right and everyone else is wrong", they're saying "this is the more or less popular opinion/consensus, and on this occasion, I don't personally agree with it".

To answer the OP, maybe Titanic, though that gets almost as much hate as love these days. A technical achievement for sure, but otherwise, dull, overblown, and littered with lazy characterisations.

Yeah, I think people are being a little pedantic. Am I supposed to say "notseeithloveth" anytime the majority like a movie I personally don't just to assure people I'm not being a little dictator? There's already a term for it. It's like when someone asks "what's your favorite guilty pleasure?" and six guys have to ask "why should I feel guilty for liking something?" It's not that literal.

The Dark Knight is definitely overrated. Ledger gave a great performance as the Joker, but outside of that nothing really stood out in the movie. Still a good movie, just not great. Plot was decent but nothing special. Relationships between characters were there but not especially developed. Fight scenes were completely forgettable. Bale was solid as Batman/Wayne but we didn't really get to know him the same way we did in Batman Begins. There are other superhero movies out there that have more than surpassed TDK since it first came out, yet I feel like people are still stuck with nostalgia and keep referring to it as the best cbm of all time. Heck, I'd say Batman Begins was better than TDK. I have no issue with you not loving TDK, but then you go onto to make big assumptions based on your own opinion of the movie and other comic book movies. I realize you specified that "you feel" people are stuck in nostalgia. What if I said the same thing about movies you love that I don't like. Or on the flip side it would be like the superfans saying that you don't like TDK as much as them because you just don't get it or that you are just being a contrarian or you have bad taste. The Dark Knight is not only my favorite comic book movie, but one of my 50 favorite movies of all time. No other comic book movie since has even come close. I apologize, but this is a huge pet peeve of mine. Can you understand where I am coming from though?

I’m getting flashbacks to when Nolan had that quote essentially saying that he thought Tom Hardy’s performance as Bane is underrated and this board for some reason went into panic mode.
