Some consider it one of the best Stephen King movies to come out in recent years, others don't. Where do you stand on the movie?
Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review:
1408 (2007) - 3 out of 4 stars
"There have been 56 deaths, natural and otherwise, in the title room, located in Kafkaesque N.Y.C hotel-from-hell. Intrepid occult writer Cusack is determined to spend the night there. Genuinely scary thriller, nicely paced with clever touches, brings new meaning to the Carpenters' song "We've Only Just Begun." Based on a Stephen King short story. Unrated director's cut runs 112m. Super 35."

This movie works to a point, but falls apart in the last act. The main issue isn't the writing, it is the directing and John Cusack's performance is lacking. He is good at holding up the movie by himself because he is a likable actor, but when it requires him to be more emotional his acting falls flat. I blame this on the directing, because John Cusack has given good emotional performances before. I really want to like this movie, but it overall it is very disappointing. The story deserves better than what a hack like Mikael Håfström is able to do with it. The stuff that is happening in the movie should be suspensful, emotional and creepy, but it just isn't. I haven't read the novella, but after talking about why the movie doesn't work for me, I probably should.
4.5/10

Whatever happened to John Cusack? He had a Mel Gibson moment on Twitter a few years ago.
