Louis CK directed a new film called Fourth of July. He self financed this indie dramedy about a jazz musician struggling to stay sober and address issues with his family at the same time. Louis wrote the script with comic Joe List who is the star of the film. It premiered last week. At the premiere Louis and the cast talked about the movie and their experience shooting it. Nice to see Louis is back at directing and his rapport with the cast seemed really great too. The theatre was sold out and people laughed a lot especially during the first half of the movie. before the drama part starts. Fourt of July is a visibly lower budget movie than the last film Louis directed, for reasons we all know, but it still held my attention better than Elvis or Lightyear. Its been 4 days since I saw it and I am still influenced by it and thinking about similar situations I have been in and how they resolved it in the movie. Critics seem to dislike the movie but you can see the audiance enjoyes it and its not hard for me to understand why. Its especially relatable for anyone who has ever faced any difficult situation with their family, struggles/d with substance abuse or confidence crisis. I would have liked to see a bit more of some characters - especially Bob Kelly’s role seemed fun and quirky to the point that I wish we followed him more in the film, same with the father (Robert Walsh) and Naomi (Tara Pacheco), who both did So Much with so little dialogue but overall it was still a movie a) I didnt mind paying for, b) I didnt get bored with and c) still find myself thinking about days later. And thats something for me 7/10.
