I just discovered this on Quora.
What is something most people don't realize what a World War 2 soldier had to go through when they fought the Nazis?
Luke Harrison
Here’s a true story of what happened to a few American soldiers that were captured by the Leibstandarte SS:
The story is known as the Wereth 11. Which were 11 black American soldiers who were captured in Wereth in Dec 1944.
It was unknown what happened to them until weeks later in 1945 because that’s when their bodies were found, frozen in the snow.
A squad of Leibstandarte SS troops forced them to a field, questioned them, beat them, tortured them, then murdered them.
Their legs were broken.
Their faces were beaten in by rifle butts.
They had cigarette burn marks.
Their eyes were gouged out.
Their fingers were cut off.
And were covered with multiple bayonet stab wounds.
They were shown no mercy. They weren’t shot. They were run over by the SS’ vehicle which was the final blow…
These 11 men were sent to fight the Nazis. They found themselves to be lost in the woods, captured by Hitler’s bodyguard division, and tortured until their deaths. Their families didn’t know what happened to them until weeks later.
THIS is something a soldier had to go through when deploying to the European theater. Some would get lucky to be captured and treated humanely by Wehrmacht/SS. Others would be unlucky and meet similar fates.
This was the western front. A lot more people were dying on the Eastern front. The Soviets suffered heavily by Nazi Germany alone.
Most of the allies’ deaths were caused by the Germans in Europe. An allied soldier had to go through the thought of being captured by a fanatical military organization and meet any terrible fate. Facing the fact that they may never see their families again, or that their families will never hear from them again.
The names of the 11 soldiers to anyone that cares:
SSG Thomas Forte
SGT William Pritchett
SGT James Stewart
CPL Mager Bradley
PFC George Davis
PFC James Leatherwood
PFC George Moten
PFC William Turner
PVT Curtis Adams
CPL Robert Green
PVT Nathaniel Moss
I simply can’t imagine the fear and pain they felt. As a veteran, it hurts seeing their ranks and names. I’ve been there. But never faced such an event. Rest In Peace, battle buddies…

This is incredibly sad, I cannot imagine how they must have felt. It never ceases to amaze - and appall - me what human beings can do to other human beings. There was another incident, where American fliers were shot down, and while SS troops were marching the survivors into town, the German citizens stoned them to death.

A lot of Americans killed a lot of surrendered Germans. Read Rick Atkinson's Day of Battle about the Italian Campaign. A friend of my father was in a tank unit and he said they never took a prisoner it the last two weeks of the war. That was after they visited a little German town and seen the sights.
Buchenwald
The most horrifying thing he told me. Do you know how when you smell something really intensely, you know how it must taste? Like if you have ever passed a freshly killed skunk you know what the skunk juice tastes like. Well, he know what decaying human flesh tastes like. That and the words on the gate. Auschwitz had "Arbeit Macht Frei", works sets you free. Buchenwald had "Jedem Das Seine", loose translation "you get what you deserve".
War is hell

May God not have mercy on those who committed those despicable acts on those black American soldiers. I am not, as a general, a cruel or vengeful man, however I have to draw a line at this. There's no moral excuse for for these terrible deeds.

Unless you happened to be Jewish or Black it was possibly preferable for an American soldier to be captured by the Germans than being captured by the Japanese.
Germans felt the same way in relation to the Western allies vs the Soviet soldiers.
