If so, how long did it take you to get the hang of using a sewing machine? And is it relatively simple to put together, say, a blazer if you have patterns already in hand?

In high school I sewed all my clothes.
A blazer would be difficult
Try something easier to start.
It is like carpentry-- you would not start with a house

Exactly what Enigma said!
I haven't sewn for years. I don't know how far sewing machines have advanced, in the 30+ years, since I bought the one I have now. I learned on my grandmother's treadle operated machine ... which my grandfather had slightly modified to electricity for light. The one that I have has some computerized components to its function, such as settings for ornamental embroidery (which I've never used). So I would imagine that they're much advanced, now.
You do have to learn how to thread the upper upper arm/needle, as well as how to fill the "bobbin," and insert it under the needle plate. I'm guessing that the tension between the two thread origins is now fully computerized.
You might want to "hone" your skills at straight lines, and curves, on fabric remnants. And, learn the difference between delicate-to-heavy fabrics.
I agree that a blazer is an ambitious first project.
The first garment that I made ... with Grandma's close guidance ... was a jumper. (American "jumper," which is a sleeveless dress, with a blouse worn under it. I think a British jumper is more like what we would call a "sweater.")
A blazer will require; putting in sleeves, lining, button holes, and maybe affixing a collar and/or lapels.
I hope that doesn't sound discouraging ... I'd love to see you succeed. There must be many websites that can help you step-by-step.
Good luck!!!

I just borrowed a sewing machine from the library. My head is spinning from just the demo they gave me. I did not realize how complex a process it is just to thread a needle. It may take me a week just to be able to do that without consulting the manual.
