It seems like a law that e everybody breaks anyway.

It's a useless law, people jaywalk all the time, especially when police aren't around. If they get hit, that's their problem.

Actually, I didn't know for sure that it was "on the books," in the first place. I've never known/heard of anyone being cited for jaywalking.
I live on a fairly busy street, so it's not the wisest practice. One corner of my block has a 4-way stop, and the other has pedestrian crossing signs, because there's an elementary school nearby. It's not that far to either corner.
One exception is Sunday morning. Just a few hours ago, I walked mid-block across the street, to a deli ... no cars for blocks.
On the one hand, it seems reasonable not to take police officers' time, when there is no apparent danger at hand. However, I wouldn't like to see drivers blamed, should someone decide to play "chicken," and suddenly dart across the street.

I was driving from Modesto to Turlock and this homeless guy ran across three lanes of freeway in front of me. I missed him, but had to slam on the brakes in an unsafe way. I hope this doesn't become legal, divtal. Otherwise, like you, on residential streets it doesn't seem bad.

I've been jaywalking all my life, and no one ever paid attention until I visited Dallas, TX.
Halfway down the block I encountered a construction site and had to cross the street. Instead of retracing to the corner, I did what I always do, crossed in the middle. The next thing I heard was "YOU THERE" and I turned to see a lady cop about five feet tall coming at me like Sly Stallone outracing an explosion.
As much as I can remember, the rest of the conversation went something like this:
Cop: Do you know what you just did?
Me: A stunned silence
Cop: You were jaywalking.
Me: I'm sorry. I just wanted to cross the street. (at that point she heard my non-Texas accent)
Cop: Where are you from?
Me: New York City.
Cop: Well, you may be able to get away with that in New York City, but you're in Dallas, Texas now. If I see you do that again, I'll arrest you.
Me: Yes, mam.
Don't jaywalk in Dallas, Texas, unless you look both ways and don't see a cop. On second thought, don't jaywalk at all. The cop may be five feet tall and under your sight line.

For a while in NYC they had what they called a Barnes Crossing ... for a short time all vehicles in ALL directions were stopped and pedestrians could cross any which way ... straight or diagonally but from the corners ..NOT mid block ! Then the lights would go back to normal with east/west or North/south crossings and traffic. enigma72 People WALK in California ?

I don't think it should be enforced very strongly except for maybe areas with heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic, but I disagree with scrapping the law altogether.
I was reprimanded by a cop once for crossing the street on foot when the light was open for cars. Of course there was no risk to myself or to anyone else at that particular moment, but a cop saw me doing it, stopped me and gave me a verbal warning.

The first time I encountered one was at Oxford Circus. Bit weird until you get used to them.

That's fuct.
There's too often jaywalking seniors who die around these parts, is that a driver's fault?? Is legalizing it going to put more onus on drivers?

Malcolm Gladwell's pod did a eps on future driverless A.I. cars, & how one day pedestrians will literally be able to cease all traffic if they wish. Commerce would be broken with that, not to mention surface transit, school transportation, etc.

But we all jaywalking on not so busy streets. Like most residential.
