The album where Metallica "sold out" (though I've heard other people say And Justice for all was where it started). Not as good as their 80s albums, but still a solid listen overall (Where ever I May Roam and Enter Sandman are stellar). And say what you will about it, but it's still unquestionably better than Load (which is where I think the downhill slide really started). I would argue it's also better than Countdown to Destruction.

"Sad But True" is one of my favorites.

The weakest of the first 5, but still great. I find it weird how people say this is where Metallica sold out, yet like Enter Sandman, which is peak example of Metallica selling out.

If "The Unfogiven" is them selling out then they should have sold out sooner.

Good acquaintances of mine got me into Metallica at the start of 1991. So, the cassettes for "....And Justice For All" and "Master Of Puppets" were in my walkman CONSTANTLY.
It was announced that they would be releasing a new album in the summer of 1991. Naturally, I was excited to hear it!
In fact, I ended up getting it on cassette the week of its release.
Not as edgy as "....And Justice For All" and "Master Of Puppets", but "The Black Album" is a really good album!
For the record, for all 3 of these albums, I ended up getting them on CD when I got a CD player.
For "....And Justice For All" and "Master Of Puppets", I ended up getting the 30th anniversary editions.
"The Black Album" also had a 30th anniversary re-release. I downloaded Weezer's version of "Enter Sandman". They do a very decent cover version of this song!

Smashing album...love it. Eminently replayable cuts.
Sold out ? Twattish soundbites by talentless trilobites.
Perhaps they should have released it for zero pence and carried on the day jobs of plumbing or whatever. Good grief !!

I never felt Metallica sold out. They changed but it was ok, I didn't mind. I liked Load and Reload. I jumped off the train when S&M came out. Orchestral Metal, no thanks. Might as well put fruit on pizza. Megadeth was another story. I remember buying Countdown and trying to like it in 1992. I never bought another one after this, never cared.
