B+While quite enjoyable dialogue & banter, I just couldn't buy into Lina never walking away from Johnnie. Has she zero self-respect? She's the most levelheaded in the film about everything else. Anyways, I actually like the cinematic ending it was dealt by the studio - I've read the alts & they would've been a full failure of Lina's existence. At least this one is a payoff of sorts & puts a puzzle together. Hitchcock would've had her drink the poisoned milk only after giving a sealed letter for her mother to Johnnie to mail... saying she knew he was killing her, yet she too in love to care. Nonsense - she'd been hesitant since his lying about his finances midway through.

According to biographer Donald Spoto, Hitchcock’s story about wanting to follow the book’s ending— Johnnie being a murderer, Lina drinking the poisoned milk —isn’t true. My biggest problem is not the ending per se—although the book’s ending would fit better with Hitchcock’s favorite themes, I think—but rather that it’s so abrupt and tidy. It certainly doesn’t convince me. Which is all too bad, because otherwise the movie is one of my favorite Hitchcocks. I love when Cary Grant gets to show off his sinister side, and this performance may be his most sinister. Excellent performances from Joan Fontaine and Nigel Bruce. Crackling script, largely written (again according to Spoto) by one of my favorite screenwriters, Samson Raphaelson. But that ending…

As a prep, I'd read a quick review which gave 3 out of 4 stars, except for its irregular ending. Not because the original was too dark, yet because for its time, the studio wouldn't allow Cary Grant to appear distrusting on screen. I get that. Funnily enough, with this & Ambersons, that's 2 classics in a row now I've watched with notable re-endings.
