Leaving for the theater in a few minutes! So... what's the verdict? Well, honestly it really comes down to one thing: this movie needed T’Challa. I respect and understand the decision not to recast, but I just don’t think the story worked all that well without him. If Boseman was still with us and had starred in the movie as intended I think it could’ve been great- perhaps really great. But it just felt like it was missing it’s protagonist. I found myself constantly wondering what could have been. The cast is still great though. Angela Basset was particularly good. Shuri was better than I thought she could ever be. I even liked Riri, which I honestly didn’t expect. The movie felt long- not dull or boring, but kind of aimless. Again, the lack of a Black Panther (until Act 3) is the sole reason for that. The effects were hit and miss. The attack on Wakanda would’ve been cool AF had I not been distracted by that really washed out low contrast look. I love world building and the city design is still awesome- it just didn’t look realistic here. All I saw was a green screen. Very distracting and immersion breaking. I guess I should be used to that by now with the MCU. And what is up with all the super dark cinematography? Did people forget how to light a scene properly? So many pitch dark scenes! Namor and his people were a highlight. The feet wings strangely work quite well. The Mayan origin was a really smart change and although the backstory was heavy handed and full of exposition I still found it to be intriguing. The score was pretty great too. Very eerie music for the blue man attacks. These rambling thoughts aside, I’d say it’s one of phase four’s best, if not only by default. I’d rank it below Dr Strange and Spider-Man. But it’s also not one I’m gonna be eager to revisit.

One of the things that reduced my enjoyment of this film is that the lightning was so dark in a lot of the scenes. I had to really strain to see a lot of the scenes shot at night or underwater. Great for creating suspense, not so great when doing action. Oh absolutely! I don’t know what they were thinking with that.

Also, did I miss something or did Riri straight up murder a bunch of cops on that bridge?

But it’s also not one I’m gonna be eager to revisit. I felt Letitia Wright had improved a lot from the first movie and she did give a pretty good performance here.... but she's no Chadwick Boseman. She was solid here but didn't quite have the charisma nor gravity to play lead to a movie this massive. Angela Bassett did, and had she been the focal point of the movie I think it would have turned out to be a lot better. But she wasn't lead, and sadly neither was M'Baku. And I feel like this added a lot to the movie's feeling of lacking cohesion.

M’Baku was really underused here. As was Nakia. I know Shuri becomes BP in the comics but I would’ve chosen Nakia. Lupita could’ve been a really strong lead.

I think from home release onwards, they should minimize (if not axe alltogther) the 'Black Panther' in title & officially call this 'Wakanda Forever'.
It's an odd one because recasting doesn't seem as weird, yet only in hindsight. Unlike going from Terrence Howard to Don Cheadle, T'Challa was far too iconic a character/role by a singular actor.
I've heard that most of the movie's script & storyline was what we actually got, so that's a plus. Ppl thinking it's all makeshift should calm down a bit.

Certainly not in this thread. The plot would’ve been the same (Namor’s threat), but the story would’ve been different: It was meant to be about TChalla being a father. So what you’re saying here is not accurate,

Wouldn't it have to be? It was written before he died. With him in it. I seriously doubt they just gave his lines to another character.

I don’t see how anyone can pretend it’s the same script. The central character was removed. I get some people are defensive about it, but it absolutely would’ve been a different movie if Boseman was still with us

Isn’t this the second time that T’Challa has died? He disappeared in the blip which everyone considered to be death. Why wasn’t he replaced then?

Maybe he had to challenge whoever was the BP when he came back from the blip. It's irrelevant to the story, so they didn't bother showing us.

Having a former deposed ruler of Wakanda around after T'Challa died is a very big thing. At the very least he/she should have been in contention for the throne after T'Challa passed away.

Killmonger burned all the plant This was brought up in Wakanda Forever. Shuri has been trying to synthesis the plant, but kept failing until Namor gave her his mother's bracelet made from the plant that transformed his people. So even with T'Challa blipped 5 yrs, no one could become Black Panther. Mythology, dude. And if Shuri was blipped, there went 5 yrs trying to replace it.
