The brightest Gamma Ray burst in recorded history hit the Earth in February
This shit absolutely blows my mind. A star gets ripped apart and eaten by a black hole. 8,000,000,000 years ago. A Gamma Ray burst is created and it bops across the Universe at roughly 670,616,629 mph. And eight billion years later it hits the Earth.
Even more mind blowing is this little red blob
The light that made that photo left Galaxy HD 1 13,787,000,000 years ago. The Universe was only about 324,000,000 years old. And the beginning of star formation might have started around 500,000,000 years ago. That's a baby photo of the Universe. And now, HD 1 is 33,228,000,000 light years away.
Make you realize how insignificant we are. And how much more there is to learn. 100 years ago, the leading scientific minds thought that all of the Universe was in the Milky Way Galaxy and took up about 30,000 light year from one end to the other.

At any moment we are one big solar flare away from going back to 1800s tech. Worse actually since we have replaced mechanics with electronics, we would be pre-industrial.

Well, that would be one way to stop the internet in its tracks. I wonder what that would be like? We would all have time for other things! And carbon emissions would drop! This stuff is interesting; science has brought us so far in our knowledge of how the world, and universe, work. Galaxies and black holes, light years...

At any moment we are one big solar flare away from going back to 1800s tech. Worse actually since we have replaced mechanics with electronics, we would be pre-industrial. Well, that would be one way to stop the internet in its tracks. I wonder what that would be like? We would all have time for other things! And carbon emissions would drop! This stuff is interesting; science has brought us so far in our knowledge of how the world, and universe, work. Galaxies and black holes, light years... It would be bad. There would be widespread fuel and food shortages. No tv, internet, radio, no way for people to be reassured or updated on progress. Batteries would be depleted within days with no way to recharge them. Power could be out for a week or more in major areas, weeks or months in other areas. People panicked over toilet paper and Enfamil shortages, wait until they've gone without food for a few days. If it continues, the police would turn against citizens and seize resources for their own families. Citizen militias and gangs would also seize resources. There would be martial law, the National Guard would likely shoot looters on sight but not be very effective at gaining control. If it continued for more than a few weeks, millions would die. Those who hadn't planned ahead would die. Continued chaos would hamper repair efforts. Amateur astronomers would be heaven though, lights out! I watched an engineering video about what might happen to the power grid if an atmospheric thermonuclear device went off over the United States and it would completely shut down some areas and effects would be less severe farther away. The more damage that is done to electric company equipment and generators, the longer it would take to repair. Some things are just so complicated there are no spares. But at the end they mentioned a large solar flare would be far worse.

I live in a rural area, with a woodburning stove, so loss of electricity doesn't scare me, but there would be looters, etc., and for an oldster like me, I probably wouldn't last long. Water source would be an issue, too, unless I went deep into the woods and camped. So, I am hoping that thermonuclear device doesn't go off, or that flare doesn't happen while I am still alive.
