Has anyone else watched it? I was gonna see the play version but then covid happened.
Even though it's technically based on a play, it's still weird to see a direct remake of such an iconic movie. Often times it looks like Mean Girls and sounds like Mean Girls but something is off. Like the uncanny valley almost. Whether someone is trying to deliver the same line the same way ("You can't sit with us!"), or the same line in a slightly different way ("Stop trying to make 'fetch' happen!" ), or a line itself is different or committed entirely ("Watch where you're going, fatass"), your mind always goes back to the original, "correct" version.
The new Janis and Damien are the only characters really given elbow room to do something different, and they're probably the best part of the movie. The new Karen also stood out, if only because she's one of the most attractive girls I've ever seen. The other big difference is of course the musical numbers, but honestly, none really landed with me and they feel like distractions from the plot.
But overall, it's okay for what it is.
