Watched the extended version (almost 4 hours long) and what really stands out is the beautiful cinematography. This is one gorgeous movie. I think Costner's narration at times lacks any conviction, like he is reciting names out of a telephone book. I kinda wish they had done away with that. The rest of the cast is quite good. Barry's score is outstanding. So is Costner's direction. 9/10

10/10 - One of the best movies ever. Not only are the visuals of the wide open plains and sunsets stunning, the music is also incredible, composed by the great John Barry.

Nice cinematography but otherwise dull, as might be expected from a lifeless actor like Costner. Little Big Man presented the same themes many years earlier.

A beautiful movie, even though it does drag on in some parts, but the highlights is of course the music, locations which are all done extremely well, and even if Kevin Costner have never been a big favorite of mine, this is a very good film and maybe his finest hour, and it deserves an: 8/10

Kind of like A Man Called Horse, without the grit.

9/10. Costner's narration seems to fit the character, time, and place better than if he'd been more effusive and brought more modern day language.
Mary McConnell's character, seemed too modern. Costner says in the commentary he was too smitten with her to make her less glamorous. She has modern makeup and a tussled modern hairstyle.
Loved the Sioux - Wind in His Hair was a great character, and I love Tantoo Cardinal in anything she's in (she's Black Shawl, Kicking Bird's wife in this).
Yeah, it's the white guy saves the day for the minority, and the soldiers were too 1-dimensionally evil. And they execute the lone Pawnee in a circular firing squad without hitting each other, but I get sucked into watching whenever it's on.

B+
While there's not much there there as it were, the film is nonetheless a worthy look at the American frontier before it vanished. The first half is better, with Costner finding his way & Sioux just as fascinated about him. Then he shaves his face & tropes start up - the romance stuff & battles with cliche uniformed malcontents.

According to Edgar K. B. Montrose, the guy who played Kicking Bird was pretty good and should have won the Oscar.
