I think if they follow these rules they would have a good chance of overtaking Marvel…
-Hire talented directors with a true creative vision. This will make it more difficult to create a cohesive shared universe but the trade off would be well worth it. Gunn should hire more guys like Matt Reeves and avoid the temptation to enlist directors for hire like Marvel often does. A truly radical idea in today’s media landscape: Let each of these movies be their own unique experience.
-Avoid the abundance of self deprecating humor. All blockbusters need humor. But it should come organically from the characters and story. Basically, don’t make fun of your own characters and constantly wink at the audience. With Gunn though this is probably unavoidable.
-No mandatory streeeeeaming shows. The general audience doesn’t give a damn about keeping up with a dozen tv shows a year. Marvel is learning this the hard way right now. My prediction is that this strategy is really gonna backfire in Phase 5. If they’re smart and not greedy DC can avoid this pitfall.

That was more or less their MO back in the Snyder days, although of course, your mileage may vary on how “talented” people like Zack Snyder and David Ayer are.

4. Put three major characters in the same movie and kill one of them off. And let one of the protagonists watch teaser trailers for the next 5 movies. It's foolproof!

Well, when picking directors with a creative vision there’s always a chance it will backfire. And you could argue Snyder was in charge of way too much. He even basically picked and introduced all the JL characters. WW and Aquaman may have been very different had casting been up to Jenkins and Wann.

Honestly I don't even know if they could beat the MCU at this point. I think the DC brand is severely damaged.
It's going to take a lot of time and effort to repair it.

So you're saying they should follow the model of the Godzilla Millennium era and release a set of unrelated films.

A truly radical idea in today’s media landscape: Let each of these movies be their own unique experience. I agree in theory, but the problem is that talented directors (and writers--don't forget them!) with "true creative vision" don't like being hired to work on someone else's projects. If Gunn is truly running things, all directors are going to be hired guns to some degree or other, unless they are the ones who approach him first with their own ideas, at which point he has to figure out if what they want fits into the larger picture he's painting as head of DC films. Case in point, Matt Reeves. His Batman saga is not going to be part of the official shared DC superhero story and line up, but will be its own, self contained thing.

It is probably naive to think there could ever be a significant number of visionary directors within a shared universe. The fact that Reeves’ franchise is being kept apart is very telling. I hope the director of the new Superman can at the very least bring a distinct visual style

Your thread inspired me to think through the movie I’d make in DC/WB’s shoes. I was thinking of a standalone Superman movie with Cyborg Superman as the villain. (Ideally, they release it before Marvel releases its Fantastic Four movie: The Cyborg Superman origin story spoofs the Fantastic Four’s.) The movie starts and ends on Christmas, with major events happening on holidays throughout the year. (This isn’t strictly necessary, but I think it’d be a neat schema running throughout the movie.) It starts with Hank Henshaw’s exposed-to-deadly-radiation-and-turned-into-cyborg origin story (well, a simplified version—it’s more complex than I remember, according to the Wiki summary). Henshaw blames Superman for the radiation and raids every database for information on Supes, discovering his secret identity. Henshaw, driven mad, then kidnaps and chains up Superman using kryptonite and changes his appearance to look exactly like Superman. His goal is systematic destruction of Supes’s reputation. Henshaw reveals the Clark Kent identity to the world, alienating the Daily Planet team; publicly allies with Lex Luthor; kills criminals and refuses to work with law enforcement; and invites worldwide press to Ma and Pa Kent’s farm. (I was also thinking he’d propose to Lana Lang and then break her heart—something to hurt every person Superman knows and loves.) The only people skeptical about the ruse are Luthor, who is baffled by Superman’s change of personality, and Jimmy Olsen, whom Henshaw’s databases left out. Jimmy is the one who eventually tracks down and frees the real Superman, who (after more plot shenanigans) beats Henshaw. But he still has to deal with the consequences of Henshaw’s actions, including his biggest secret’s being revealed. So, yeah, that’s my idea for a Superman story. (It has similarities with another Supes idea I had that also involves his identity getting revealed, though that had Luthor as the villain and I’m loath to make Lex the main baddie in yet another movie.) I’d happily write it for DC, but they’d have to pay me.

1 ) Force everyone to watch She Hulk and Baby Groot on an endless loop.
2 ) Declare victory.

They're not going to overtake a 14-year head start. They couldn't with a 5-year one, so why would this be any different? At this point, their battle is for survival/relevancy, not with the competition.
Edit: if you count Green Lantern as the first attempt, then it would have only been a 3-year head start if they pulled it off, but they didn't. Alas.

They don’t need to surpass the achievements of the MCU. They only need to surpass what the MCU is right now. And right now I don’t think that’s all that difficult of a feat.
