What are they, and what do you believe? The Book of Revelation (aka the Apocalypse) was all about the persecution of the early Christian Church in the Roman Empire. It was written to give Christians hope in the face of persecution.

What are they, and what do you believe? The Book of Revelation is about the future of the world from the 1st Century onward. Part of it has happened already and the rest is yet to happen.

It’s a 1st century allegorical fiction predicting the demise of Rome.
And it came true, didn’t it.

Whenever someone “interprets” a belief differently than the previous person, “voila”, a new religion is born. In 99.9999% of those cases, that new religion dies when that interpreter dies. In the rare cases, the interpreter (e.g. Muhammad, Mary Baker Eddy, David Koresh) takes it to extreme and seeks followers who blindly follow the new interpretation. However, nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky (Kansas, 1977). The Branch Davidians and People’s Temple are history. The 250 year old Shakers are down to one congregation of three members. Two churches in my town recently closed (one of them sold the building to a competing religion). Probably not in my lifetime, but sooner or later, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Church of Scotland, the Swiss Reformed Church, and others will become dust in the wind. Penn Jillette

Revelation is the only apocalypse in the canonical Bible except for small portions of Daniel in the Hebrew scripture and Mark and parallels in the Gospels. Books in the Jewish apocrypha like I Enoch are examples of apocalyptic writing.

Besides Revelation, there was also another (apocryphal) apocalypse credited to St. John as well. Apocalypse Of St. John
There are also few other apocryphal apocalypses as well: Apocalypse Of Sedrach
Apocalypse Of St. Peter
Apocalypse Of St. Paul
Apocalypse Of The Blessed Virgin Mary
