NDEs are a big thing nowadays. People who are resuscitated come back with all kinds of spectacular stories about what 'happened' (to them) while their brain was on hiatus. I think it's more accurate to say these are what their brains made them think happened but different people have different views. A dualist might say that it proves/is evidence that there is a 'nonphysical' part of us that continues to live and generate images and perceived experiences that we remember and with which we astound those who hear the stories.
This article talks about how the "Human brain may stay active for hours after death." Hours!? What might have been tiny fraction-of-a-second dreamlike 'experiences' have now become hours long dream states where we are somewhat conscious of what's going on around us...they talk about how those resuscitated "could recall the conversations around them between the healthcare personnel and were aware of their surroundings." Yikes. I know that the only cases we hear about are where the dead or dying body is being treated, more or less carefully, by medical personnel who are trying to bring the body back to life, but what about cases where the person just dies...in less than amiable surroundings? There is no reason to think these, what could be hours long bouts of extended but dying consciousness, ONLY occur when someone is being brought back to life...resuscitated, right? It is likely that this happens every time someone dies. For all intents and purposes, they actually DO experience an 'afterlife.' And since it takes hours for these processes to cease completely and since as I understand it, vivid detailed and even terrifying dreams can occur in a few minutes, the expiring brain cells may continue to be conscious of all sorts of experiences/situations that, as far as the dying brain thinks, go on...eternally.
That was bad enough, but then I read where they've extracted living brain cells from surgery patients and kept those brain cells alive for days in vitro so they could study and stimulate them. STIMULATE THEM? link NOW, if, as I suspect, consciousness occurs at the cellular level..ie in the cells, if these particular cells are where consciousness is occurring for that individual, conscious may continue for as long as those cells are alive. Yikes Yikes!
Have a nice day.
