How do you come to terms with the fact that you will not only miss them doing things with and for you, but also doing things on their own and for themselves and others?

Almost immediately.
Case in point, I lost my father back in October of last year. I was still living with at that point. However, over the past....5 years or so, I was sort of looking after him.
After he passed, there were many decisions that had to be made - the big one being a decision to whether or not I'm going to stay in the house.
If I am/was, everything needed to be changed to my name, and taken out of my bank accounts / paid for on credit card. That would be utilities, cable, property taxes, insurance etc. PLUS, my brother and I each own a portion of the house. I would have to apply for a mortgage to 'buy him out' - so to say.
If I wasn't, I would have to move everything out of the house to put it up on the market, and probably put everything in storage. PLUS, I would have to find a new place to live. If that were the case, I would have to change everything to my new address.
In the end, I crunched the numbers, and my income is more than all expenses - even when I start paying for a mortgage. So, I'm staying in the house.
I mean - apart from being away from the house while I was going to university, this is the only home I have ever known.
To answer the question, though:
I would just hand my father my money for rent at the beginning of the month. I had no idea as to how much we were paying towards expenses. That is, until I started getting the invoices. Since he has passed, there are a few things that I am doing differently. There are a couple of lights that we kept on all the time - one in the kitchen, and one in the hall where our bedrooms are. I decided I don't need those on at all hours of the day. It may not be much, but it will probably add up in the long run.
